Isobutane is getting so expensive. Do any of you use an adapter to screw your JetBoil to the top of a 1lb propane bottle? I use mine out in the boat more than while backpacking, so the extra size is not a problem.

OR...an adapter to fill empty isobutane cannisters with propane from a 1lb propane bottle, 5lb bottle, etc?

I've been considering it. More for convenience sake since I don't use it that often so cost wise it would probably take a while to pay for itself but I already have an adapter for refilling 1lb bottles and my other stove/lantern/small bbq run off those. Be handy to have everything on the same fuel source.

How do you find the performance vs isobutane?

DO NOT fill isobutane containers with propane as they might explode. Propane is under much higher pressure - check out the material and thickness difference between the two canisters.

And yes you can get an adaptor to run your jetboil with propane. I run a steel braided line off my propane canister to the jet oil since putting it on top would be very unstable due to the tall/skinny design of the 1lb propane canisters.

The main advantage to running propane is that it's boiling point is -40 so it's a better fuel to use winter camping. Isobutane's boiling point is about +20 so anywhere around or below freezing will render the fuel useless for your stove.

How much isobutane do you use? You can get large canisters from Walmart and other locations that are like $10-12

also propane is less efficient. So it’s cheaper but you’ll use more

You're actually only half right about that - it depends on the units used to price the fuel. If you're buying by volume then yea butane has more energy content, but since we're typically buying by weight propane actually has more energy per unit. This is down to differences in specific gravity of each fuel.

So where do I get an adapter like that? Links?
I have a base to set the propane bottle in. Stabilizes it. I've cooked in the boat using a larger burner on top of the bottle with a 10" iron skillet without tipping problems. I'd rather use the JetBoil though as it applies itself better to what I need to cook out there. A big Jetboil mug full of steaming hot Broccoli/Cheese soup really hits the spot and warms you up out there on the water in the cold early Spring.

I got mine like 10 years ago. Just google propane to butane adaptor and you should get what you're looking for

They sell them on Amazon, ebay and the Chinese import sites (because all of them that I've seen are Chinese imports). This is the first one that pops up in an Amazon search- this is not an endorsement as I know exactly nothing about it other than it's the first one in a search and posted simply as an example (although it supposedly has over 2k reviews). I've got a similar one, I can't remember the brand; the first couple of times you use it double check to make sure that it's actually working correctly and not leaking before you light the appliance.

Out of curiosity, can any butane stove run on propane with an adapter? I have one that uses the butane cans but would be nice if I could run it off a propane tank. I know they make dual fuel stoves, but curious if the stoves have to be made different or it's just a matter of adding connectors.

the flame for each fuel burns at nearly the same temperature so I don't think there should be any issues. I've been burning propane in my old ass jetboil for a long time now with no issues and it's a really basic burner.

Thanks. I have one of the Eureka single burner stoves that runs on a butane canister. It's nice, but if it could be adapted to run on propane it would give me more options. Given how the butane bottle connects, however, it might not be very easy to adapt it.

You could use a hose with a 90* fitting to connect the burner in most applications if you don't want your stove on top of the bottle. That's what I typically use

It's the tall canister type that lay on the side. The dual fuel ones have some proprietary hose. Probably can't connect to this one as there isn't any threaded connector.

Easy, just cost money- you just need the adapter and hose- guess who sells those too?
    Example of fittings: https://www.amazon.com/CAMPINGMOON-...=butane+stove+hose+adapter,aps,81&sr=8-1&th=1
Then you need the hose which is unfortunately more money: https://www.amazon.com/Jeebel-Camp-Adapter-Extension-Propane/dp/B085WSHG8H?crid=3S2DX040A6W9A&keywords=Lindal+Valve+hose&qid=1654195230&sprefix=lindal+valve+hose%2Caps%2C69&sr=8-1&th=1

Again- I have zero experience with these products, just posting as examples. They all appear to be about the same, probably from the same Chinese factory, just different colors and sometimes names on them. I would be very careful about inspecting them before use including inspection of any seals- or better yet, replacing them with known quality, etc.

I've got this Gas One that comes with a separate hose with regulator (I might have a stove problem :anonymous:). https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HQRD8EO?ie=UTF8

Butane stoves so easy to use, set up. Works just like a regular stove. Here in Hawaii it is so popular the butane canister is sold everywhere, Supermarkets , Walmart, Longs drugs, etc.
Butane stoves makes a great back up stove for home users, if the power goes out.

They don't particularly like the wind though, one of those cheap folding windscreens can really help.

Remember not to put a large pot on it that will radiate heat back onto the fuel canister.

Single burner propane stove. Small Texsport propane stove $29.99. Coleman power pack $59.99

I have the Texsport propane stove, I like using this a lot. Easy to set up and use. Sits flat. I also carry the Coleman double burner propane stove for my longer camping trips. Texsport makes a great back up.
Also have a Coleman propane drip coffee maker ( I have two types) .

Amazon sells the re-filler from 5gal propane tank to the green canister. Saves money to refill these canisters. Long trips I will take my 20lbs tank.

As an aside, while discussing refilling smaller propane/butane containers...You can refill those expensive Thermocell fuel cartridges too. Refill with butane. See vids on YouTube. STORE REFILLED CARTRIDGES SAFELY OUTSIDE FOR A WEEK OR SO JUST INCASE THEY LEAK DOWN AFTER REFILL. I've never had one leak down, but you never know...

You can regenerate the Thermocell pads too! Goggle it. Get some permethrin, dilute it with water, soak pads, let them dry and you are back in business. Not recommending that you do this, but I up the permethrin ratio in the regenerating solution. REALLY increases the Thermocell's effectiveness. Country boy can survive.

As a reminder Thermocell products carry a lifetime warranty. They gladly replace malfunctioning products at no cost.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
