Adaptive Cruise Disabled in Snow?

Just got our first little bit of a snow shower here in Central VA. I noticed that the adaptive cruise was not available once the sensor in the grill was obscured, makes sense. I found out after the fact; that a long press of the CC button, regular old-style cruise engaged. Will this allow the CC to work even if the sensor in the grill is obscured? Anyone experienced or tried this?

 

Yes, I believe it will work like the old unassisted CC’s.

 

In my opinion cruise control driving in snow is beyond foolish. Snow requires full attention and manual control.

 

To answer your question, yes that’s how you engage CC without the sensor. There’s many reasons to use CC when the sensor isn’t operating. Happy cruising

 

Both of these are correct. According to the manual you can use plain old cruise control when the dynamic system is unavailable, but both sections have warnings on when you shouldn't use cruise control that you should pay attention to. Snow, twisties, and towing especially no es bueno

 

good point, while not perfect, I'd think if conditions (snow, fog, rain, etc) are heavy enough to disable the radar (or whatever it is), it's time to slow down and not rely on CC.

What could go wrong?

 

For a long time I used to commute 35 miles down US 131 to grand rapids Michigan. It was not uncommon to see 30 + vehicles in the ditches during a mild snowfall once the texting generation got their drivers licences. It's even worse now, an absolute clown show every time it snows.

I've used cruise many times when it's snowing. Snow does not mean snow covered roads. I've had my sensor covered by snow when the roads were barely wet or wet. Not slick, just wet.

Did some playing around today and found that the "old style cruise control" (long press of cc button) works great at reducing gear hunting as well. Super hilly in my area and adaptive cruise was constantly up-shift/down-shift/up-shift/down-shift on any of the hills. Anywhere from 6th down to 3rd and everything in-between. With old style cruise occasionally it would drop into 4th, but mostly 6th & 5th. Pleasant surprise!

 

And we wonder why things turn into the apocalypse every time it snows in the south. You sir, are a genius.

 

yea, the last thing you want is the computer giving 100% acceleration with snow on the road

 

i don't understand how it would make any difference

 

it doesn't have to be snow. any inclement weather that lets wet road grime (from preceding/adjacent traffic) kick up to obscure the sensor will cause adaptive CC to fail.
happened to me once on a long hwy drive in slush/rain conditions. i just used normal cc and cleaned the sensor when i got home.
