Is there a way to adjust the input power that is used by adaptive cruise control when following a vehicle, then the automated braking applies, and then when I change lanes, the system resumes the set point but yesterday the system did that to mine but the rpm’s shot up to about 45k just to gain only 5-7 mph. Is this normal that the system gun the throttle to resume the set point?

Also, is it normal with adaptive cruise control to use so much braking force when following, adjusting, and braking? In the same situation, I could have applied much less manual braking force to accomplish the same thing the automated system is doing. I have set longest distance to follow.

    Normal.

Also, don't let cruise make more than a 5 mph adjustment to your speed. Its not very talented at it. If its braking and gassing, that's a sign you shouldn't be on cruise.

45k is rather excessive! Just busting your chops. The adaptive cruise is very wonky in most toyotas...but it is normal for the truck to try to resume speed as quickly as possible.

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
Enter truck, start engine, turn off adaptive cruise. Is this a possibility?

When turning the cruise on, hold the button until the green cruise light comes on. Places you on regular standard cruise, not adaptive. problem solved. Not a fan of the adaptive cruise, and not a fan of the cruise logic, and auto braking, to maintain speed. The modern dynamic braking in cruise control is idiotic. Coasting down a hill, and the brakes (including your brake lights) come on. All the while, your fellow motorist behind you, wondering why you are braking. SMH. Ski

I gotta be honest, I had absolutely no clue how to do NON adaptive cruise in this vehicle (never had one with it until now). That is great to know, thanks.

Yes and yes. Adaptive cruise tried to maintain a constant gap. A human normally applies less braking force but reduces the gap (which seems more natural because the safe follow distance shortens with lower speed). The engine doesn't really wake up until above 4k, so that can be expected as well. Fortunately the engine is designed to rev and is quite happy staying above 4k (which is in stark contrast with the 4.0L that sounds like it'll blow up above 3k).

as mentioned, all normal. Like any cruise, it is set for convenience, not economy. So it will slow down and speed up to attempt to keep the set speed.

I find the best results using the minimum following distance, and still I have to change lanes well before to avoid the braking and attempts to shoot back up to set speed. The screen in the center of the dash will show when it detects something in front of you before it brakes. I no longer have to look at that, as I have a feel for about what the distance is.

Adaptive sucks. As for overall shit cruise control you should try a first gen Tundra. This is light years better - the non-adaptive.
