In my area say 100 miles I cannot find a single salvage 3rd gen Tacoma to even get the harness out of. Reading about replacing the main harness makes it sound like you might as well sell it and start over. Not an option in my case. Just want some features. Not life or death. Also not afraid of the work assuming there is a path forward. Including making my own harnesses to supplement.

This. I've been to most of the salvage yards in Central New York (8 or more) in search of Stock Car Parts and have yet to see a 3rd generation Tacoma that has anything other than a frame left.
Thats mostly true for 2nd generation as well, due to popularity. They are just completely picked clean, like down to the nuts and bolts. Can you buy the harnesses for this? I know you can some of them.

I have seen some on eBay for 200-400 based on the specific harness. They usually do not list how it was optioned and brand new is cost prohibitive. Making my own and running them as close to OEM is something I am considering. I am a little nuts that way with taking the time to make them to spec.

    Bill -

After a minor incident that requires me to replace most of the rear bumper pieces, I'm back looking at adding the rear parking sonar. I picked up the rear bumper harness that is for both rear parking sonar and BSM/cross traffic alert (which I already have) and I see that I am missing just the three wires (tan, purple, and black) on the main harness coming from the front of the truck. I do have the empty plugs in the dash for the clearance ECU, cancel switch, and warning buzzer. If I'm understanding correctly, I only need to run the three wires (tan, purple, black) from the rear bumper harness to the EB5 junction box connector in the engine compartment. No other wiring is needed?

    Hello Brad,
You are correct. Three wires should do it. Post #5 has a helpful attachment.
Keep us posted on your progress.

I just checked my wiring harness that goes from the BE1 connector to the EB5 junction box connector and the 3 wires are already in that harness. I'm hoping I can just plug in the various parts and install the sensors and have the parking sonar work.

Excellent! There is a high probability that you will be able to plug and go after you add the clearance warning ECU and the clearance switch assembly.
See page #1: TacomaBSMdocs2Share - Google Drive (parking Assist wiring diagram)
However, there is a possibility that the wiring from EB5 to under dash does not match the common wiring diagram.
That is, the wire from under dash to EB5 may land on different pins.
That was the case for my BSM/CTA.
Consider locating the wire lands under dash and ring them to the respective pins on EB5.
Again, high probability that EB5 to under dash (to clearance warning ecu is correct. But if not, you can ring them out with a little patience.
Let us know how you succeed.

I’m hoping that it will be plug and play. The wire colors for the parking sonar are in the correct locations at the eb5 connector.

The EB5 plug (wires that you see from the top), as you know, is the wiring harness that runs along the frame to the vicinity of the rear bumper.
The EB5 receptacle is a convenient connection to an under-dash wiring harness.
Both harnesses can vary from what we see in the common wiring diagram. Because one wiring harness is "correct" does not mean that the other harness is too.
    Best to check before connecting.

Do you have the clearance warning ECU and cancel switch?

The parking sonar wires are correct at the IA3 plug under the dash.

Finally got around to putting everything together after the rear end mishap that caused me to replace the rear bumper. I picked up the rear bumper pad along with the painted corner pieces which have the holes for the parking sensors. Intstalled those along with the bumper wiring harness for both BSM and parking sonar. In the dash I installed the parking sonar ecu, the parking sonar switch, and the warning buzzer. All of the correct wiring harness plugs were in place in the dash and I plugged them in. After the install, I started the truck up and pushed the button to turn on the parking sonar. As I backed into the garage the warning buzzer beeped and the center display changed to show the rear of the truck with the sonar active as I neared the rear wall of the garage. Everything was plug and play and works as it should.
