My wife is too short to use the A-post handle when she needs to quickly grab something for support and really misses the handle right above her head on our old Xterra. Has anyone figured out a way to somehow install a handle there? I'm thinking a strap handle like Jeeps have and bolt it in the door jam or something similar.

I’ve considered some sort of JB welded nut to the cab roof, then just finding those handles you like. Might need to have a spacer nut, but who knows until you get the headliner opened up.

I installed CARR steps so that my 5 foot wife could get in easier. Very easy to remove when you go off-road.

I believe the OP is looking for suggestions on an overhead 'Oh Shit' handle for the passenger and not steps/sliders.

That is fine but steps help too.

I don't have steps on mine... my dad has hard time to get in onto his passenger seat. He has to grab the handle on the pillar and door frame where the seat belt is at. My SR5 Tacoma had steps which my dad can easily get in the truck no problem.. I feel bad for him because I have TRD now.

So I plan to get sliders for mine so he will be able to get in easily. I know sliders could take awhile to build due lead time at companies. Unless they have them in stock and ready to ship.

So, I have a 5 year old, and my wife is only 4-11, so I'm in the same boat. I bought this paracord leash for my daughter. It mounts to the headrest and she grabs it and pulls herself up. Maybe you could fashion this to the A pillar handle to give your wife something to pull herself up with. Just a thought.

I really need this above the passenger side (3rd Gen). My petite, hemiplegic wife needs a reachable overhead grab bar. GRAB BAR.jpg

^A look at the roof structure with the headliner removed: https://www.tacomaworld.com/posts/15503347

You can poke holes in the headliner and install a strap handle using these two bolt holes highlighted. One highlighted bolt is actually used to hang the curtain airbag above the door. You'll need to add spacers and use longer bolts to avoid pinching the headliner. As the bolts are above the airbag, I'm 70% certain attaching a handle to them will not materially affect curtain airbag deployment. :D

That's very interesting! That's the best (only actually although there must be others...) pic I have seen. Still would be good to have a better view of where the airbag is. Maybe I don't know what I am looking at and it is there. Would be great to have the location of the sockets so I could punch the holes in the headliner without having to remove the whole thing first.

Removing the headliner seems like a big project. Haven't done it before so maybe it's not as bad as I am thinking? I got the strap handle and it works but isn't much for looks. Have though of just using some short sheet metal screws to go into the top of the door frame just inside the seal. Maybe 2 screws on each strap. Could do a thin metal plate too but need to keep the thickness of things low.

How about a handle that hooks over the top of the window? Reluctant to drill holes in the top of the door and would look a lot better than the strap around the door frame I have some thick (0.032 or 0.040") aluminum "coil stock" from gutters that could be formed into a U shape to hook over the top of the window. Maybe even pad the sides with some thin stick on foam. Then a couple holes for a strap handle. I know I shouldn't put my full weight on the window but it's really just to steady when once seated and wouldn't be used for getting in.
