The paint I threw on the fenders and hood were less than stellar. And, I am a little anal about how my rigs look as well as perform. That and I also decided to keep the factory flares. So, I grabbed another hood, and two fenders from Certifit with the flares cutout holes in them and decided to try to shoot the fenders and hood the "professional" way.

I had a Harbor Freight HVLP gun that we used to paint my old orange 1st gen 4runner. That paint job came out good enough for me considering it was done inside a fabshop. So, I went ahead and ordered some paint from Napa to match the 040 Super White II paint code on the Tacoma. I ended up getting 2qts with the proper reducer and super gloss hardner for $120.

The result came out pretty damn good and despite spilling a fully mixed cup of paint, I still had enough to get great coverage. They took a total of three coats. Also, an Easy-Up and some tarps makes for a decent paint booth.

You mentioned expedition in an earlier post along with SAS. Are you planning on linking or running leaf sprung front?
What kind of weight are you going for? I'm assuming some gnarly front, rear, and side armor, along with bed rack and RTT?

My expedition wheeling is more on trails like Rubicon, Dusy Ershim, etc. I will never own a Roof top tent or run a bed rack. FWIW, I live in the USA, I don't see a reason to need an RTT to keep the lions and tigers out of my tent. lol

I'll camp on the ground with a 5lb tent instead of running a 250lb tent over my head.

I haven't 100% decided on leaf or link. The rear will remain leaf sprung for sure. I could french the hangers and runs leafs up front, but linking it really is likely the way that this will go.

I hear ya. Obviously there's no reason to really worry about wild animals but I have my RTT because of the quick easy setup and the comfort. I love being able to roll into camp in the dark and in the rain and be set up in less than 2 min and in my sleeping bag. And the mattress in most RTT's beats any ground pad I've ever used.

edit: oh and a RTT is usually only 100-150lb, not 250. ;)

Nothing against sleepig in a ground tent, it's just easier and more comfortable in a RTT IMO.

back on topic....loving the build! Keep it up. I really appreciate you guys documenting and sharing your projects. Big

    I hear ya.

Its just that my RTT is 30ft long with two slides.

I just can't justify the price tag considering I would sleep in it once or twice per year.

Scotty, how did you come across this wrecked truck? And, if you don't mind me asking... how much would something like that run?

...I'm really starting to ponder a double cab swap on my '96...

Read the new Tacoma mag article. I list how I found it in there.

I didn't find it on copart.

    Hey Scotty,

Good job on that article... I like seeing these rigs come back to life. Actually, I liked Blackdawg and NYCO's articles too. Hey, if you run into another opportunity like this one come your way, would you contact me? Like I said before, I'm getting kind of serious about doing a double cab swap on my '96.

    Growing up fast!

I was running some BFG Rugged Trail TAs in the rear and they were downright dangerous in the ice. And since 285s are cheaper than 265s at Discount I decided that a lift was in order. So, I headed down to Toytec this morning to grab some stuff. I came home with some Bilstein adjustables, top hat spacers, rear block kit, and some wheel spacers. Got it all installed by 2pm and headed to Discount Tire. Drove out with some 285s Cooper Discoverer ATPs.

I run a set of these on the wife's suburban and love them. Seem MUCH better than the POS Rugged Trails they replaced. 2wd traction is already a night and day difference.

Now i need to regear it this weekend to push these around. 5.29s should do it and set me up for 37s in the future.

Oh, and I threw one of our new plate bumpers on it too.
