What are your thoughts on adding a different set of gears to help the little Taco motor/trans out while running bigger tires (285/70/17)?? Just exploring ideas/options...

    Thanks

IMO the tires that it comes with are too big with the way it is geared. go bigger and yea re-gear or you will never use 6th gear. i was going up a slight incline maybe 5% in 5th gear at 45mph. holding steady on the gas pedal the truck started to slow down enough i had to down shift to 4th still holding the gas steady and then it speed-ed up. stock it act's like my old 4.0 jeep that i put 33" tires on after that i never used 5th gear. last, the incline i described above i drive daily and in my 2008 tacoma 4.0 never had that issue.

Yah that's my thoughts too...its just the cost of it all...the off road shop quoted me with a air locker up front $4500 installed...that seems way way out to me, but, I could be wrong...need to check around!

Any time you increase tire size, you need to adjust your final drive ratio to account for the difference.

With that size, and how tall 6th is on the auto, I wouldn't be afraid of 4.88 either.

I thought about the 4:88 and that may be an option for sure!

You can always just do the back and make sure you keep it in 2wd and see if you like them on the street.

there is no 4.88 gears for the front clamshell. And at 4500 i hope that shop provides the lube, cuz they are bending you over pretty hard. should be less than half that cost.

Looks like you are paying for the clamshell due to the carrier break, which seems strange if they are using thick cut gears. There's $365 saved. And also 5 hours to install a compressor, you might as well do that yourself, theres another 425 back. 13.5 hours of labor seems about right for setting up the gears

A front clamshell with an ARB from ECGS is 1475
    Rear 8.4" regeared is 675.
Assuming you buy your own compressor or add the cost of 275 in for it that brings the total to 2425. I would just do that and install yourself, save the other 2 grand for the beer.

yeah you can buy a lot of beer and pizza with the leftover money or hell maybe even get some bigger tires. Seems crazy to pay someone that much labor but that's just me lol
