Hey guys! Is adding a differential locker to a 2x4 Tacoma a good idea and a good investment?

IMO trading for a 4x4 would be better way to go.

I guess it depends on the reason behind you wanting a locker. If that reason has anything to do with off-roading, I’d personally just trade in for a 4x4.

Toyota put a locker on the prerunners rear and sold plenty, so those folks thought it was a good idea.

If you're into baja racing that's the MO. It will add quite a bit of capability off road but obviously can't match a 4x4's capability.

In snow it'll put you all over the place, unless you have some skills you shouldn't use it on snow or ice.

What's your goal with the truck?

Lots of fun to be had in the sand with a locker in a 2x4

It wouldn’t be a good investment for me, but I live in the Midwest. If I were in the desert, I would probably have a different opinion.

A 4x2 with a locker will do much better than a 4x2 without, but if you're lifting, adding bigger tires, and thinking about adding a locker- at what point do you accept you should get a 4x4? Not trying to be an ass, right now you can trade it in, before you get too deep down the rabbit hole. Mods do not add value, so anything you're adding is just a loss, unless you remove.

Check out the video below. It describes all the different styles of lockers.
