So I have a 2013 Access Cab and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to add a toolbox to it? I'm going off to college next year (getting to swim so I was thinking of tossing my smelly swim stuff in there plus some tools and stuff.) The school is about 10 hours away so if I'm traveling back home will it help me packing wise or would it just get in the way?

I'm sure you could benefit from a toolbox. It's a relatively inexpensive, relatively secure addition for cargo. I've always had double cabs so I used to throw my crap in the back seat whenever I went home for college. If you can afford the upgrade you could also consider a hard tonneau. One thing that always bothered me about college is people would sometimes fuck with vehicles in our dorm parking garage so I never wasted money on a soft top or soft tonneau at the time. I do have a Soft top now though, but I'm a few years out of undergrad.

People used to throw trash in my truck bed, found a few half full beers that leaked out in the bed from jackasses. Came back to the truck with the tailgate down once and half the other pickups in the garage the same. So I never trusted other college students lol.

I'm defiantly leaning towards a toolbox.. The store in town that I had gone to suggested not to get any of the soft top as people would break them so easliy

Yep all it takes is a knife or razor blade and soft tops or soft tonneaus are useless security-wise.

I have a tool box and I freakin love it. I have my truck loaded up with random shit, and I can't tell you how time's it's come in handy. I have straps, jackstands, bottle jack, wheel chocks, road flares, etc. Plus it's a great place to set stuff as I'm getting out of my truck and gathering all my stuff up. It's also a lot of fun collecting stickers on the inside of the lid. I have one that's low profile, as well as narrow, so I don't sacrifice too much bed space.

That's what I've been looking for is something narrow and low profile so that I don't sacrifice too much bed space. I think it'll really help me able to put some stuff in there in case I break down since I'll be driving back and forth a lot

Then I think you know what you need to do  *knock on wood* I've never had to use my tools for me, but always for someone else. I like being prepared enough to where I can pull over and help someone out who needs it. Just the other week I yanked a mini van out of some soft sand on the highway shoulder.

Ditto here. Have been looking at the UWS boxes in black. I know some prefer the Toyota boxes because of the ease of installation and there are some other good options out there. Still need to do some research but would appreciate any suggestions. I have a DCSB so don't want anything full-size. Would love to see a few pics with model #s if there's anyone out there who'd like to share.

    Thanks in advance...

I'll post some pics up in a bit. Check craigslist too. I snagged mine for $60 and it's still going strong a year later.

Really like that! Did you get it from Lowes or a store like that?

A toolbox is definitely a good idea based on your needs.

I'm still searching for ways to squirrel away tools and supplies without eating up bedspace. Right now I use a tough plastic tub tied down so I can remove it when I go pickup a load of mulch or sod, whatever I need. I can't afford to lose any bedspace to a permanently installed tool box. I'm looking for something under the hood and behind the fenders maybe? Has anyone looked at cutting out the sheet metal in front of the rear wheel to mount a side box, like the ones on tow trucks and big rigs?

Do you ever have people ride in your back seat? You could build some storage stuff back there. Or even get rid of the chair on only the driver side. Then all your tools are easily accessible and and you could still drive 3 people around.

I have two car seats back there that I use every morning and half the afternoons for the kids...occasionally we'll all go somewhere int h truck so I need the ability to have all 4 of us in there. The space under the rear seats is packed and the floor is lined in rolled up recovery straps, tree savers, wood blocking and a second tool bag rolling around. luckily the kids legs are too short to reach the floor! And I screwed my fire extinguisher mount into the little mound under the lip of the rear seat to keep it off the floor. That works real nice, the fit is great, I can get to it quickly and it doesn't roll around so I always know where it is.

Hmmm. If youre handy, you could enlarge the storage bins in the bed. There's a lot of extra room in between the bed and bedsides. You could make some custom storage bins
