Thought I'd setup a thread for using OpenPilot on Tacomas to add things like AAC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and maybe Lane centering on 2005 + up Tacomas.

    Background...

There's an opensource software solution for adding things like smart cruise control and lane centering to cars that didn't come with these features from the factory. If you're looking for a prepackaged solution https://comma.ai/ provides them for cars that can be "upgraded" easily. (Tacomas aren't on the list) However, because Comma.ai made the code opensource anyone can use it. This means there's several cars that can us OpenPilot that aren't officially on the list of supported cars.

If you want a quick background on how OpenPilot works read through this site https://tinkla.us/index.php it's primarily geared to getting OpenPilot working with a Tesla but provides a great overall background on how the tech works.

How OpenPilot could work with 2005+ Tacomas...

    1. OpenPilot requires a Can Bus so this means 2005 and up Tacomas only
    2. OpenPilot can work with controlling acceleration and deceleration of the gas pedal
    3. Here's a Comma Petal that works with Toyota (will likely work with Tacoma but might require code updates) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Comma-Peda...eline-Acura-RDX/184673640260?fits=Make:Toyota

Comma Petal when combined with a EON running OpenPilot should give AAC without braking to Tacomas.

    What will require some hacking...

Braking, since Tacoma braking is hydraulic not electric there needs to be some way for OpenPilot to control braking.

    1. Can something like the Comma Petal be added before the ABS to control it + use ABS functionality for braking in AAC?
    2. Is the braking pressure applied by ABS all or nothing or can braking be applied at different levels and durations?
    3. Is there a way to add Electric Braking to a Tacoma if ABS can't be leveraged?

Steering, since Tacoma steering is hydraulic we're pretty much stuck.

    1. Can a 3rd party electric steering solution from something like https://www.unisteer.com/ be added to a Tacoma and controlled by OpenPilot?
    2. Is there a 3rd party solution that can be adapted to the current Tacoma steering solution that can be controlled by OpenPilot

I don't know if this post will go anywhere. Just throwing out some information. I know the Tacoma community is very resourceful + could leverage some of the new tech coming out.

    Stock for now.. maybe
Interesting but a bit scary at the same time, possibly because I don't fully understand how it works. Crazy how tech is moving so fast

I'm with you 100%. I work with computers + code everyday and think Can Bus is way over complicated/unnessasary. It's also interesting that more aftermarket businesses aren't providing the hardware needed to implement ACC + Lane Centering. It's not magic + can be done.
