What’s three years old? Also, I tend to drive the shit out of my truck during the summer; Quite a bit of time on the highway!

The spring I presently have in my truck..was done as a recall because of potential issues with the airbag, though I never had a problem. I'd check your VIN through Toyota and see if yours is eligible..

I do more in the summer also but not regular highway especially not this year

I found this ebay seller who sells a kit like Rostra:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Tacoma-2007-2019-Cruise-Control-Kit-New/201151036812?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

In the item description, he says how one can test to see if all the prewiring is in place:

Testing for prewired condition of vehicle -
1.Place a small towel on the steering wheel just below the airbag.
2.Locate access holes on either side of the lower steering wheel cover. Take a Torx T-30 and unscrew the airbag.
(On some of the 2013-14, it is a spring clip at 3 points instead of two Torx bolts.) Lean the air bag forward gently
onto the towel but DO NOT UNPLUG IT.
3.So if you look at the second picture on the eBay listing, referring to the white 4 pin plug at top center and behind the black cable, the bottom 2 pins are empty. (Third picture is of the later Tacoma - same 2 bottom pins, just no whit connector shell in place.) Take a piece of wire, or maybe an unbent paperclip, and with the key turned to the 'run' position, momentarily short the two pins to each other. There are three pins, and if you stay on this connector, you can't damage anything. If this makes the dash indicator light up, you know you're in a prewired vehicle.
So to recap. Expose the white 4 pin connector. Turn the key on to the run position. Put a wire jumper on the two bottom pins, but just for a moment. This should turn the indicator lamp on. Shorting it again momentarily turns the indicator back off
    =======================================================================
You will need to move the horn wire to the new cruise harness.
The plug you remove so that the cruise plug I provide will work has a single wire on it that needs to be transferred to the harness I send. This is your horn wire. Make sure you note the position of it on the old plug so you can correctly remove and reinstall it into the new plug.
    To remove the connector:
    1) Take a thin bladed knife and pry the rectangular retainer up from both plugs.
    2) Carefully keeping your fingertips out of the way of the sharp connector pin, pop it loose and install it in the other.
    3) Snap the rectangular retainer back in. If it won't go all the way down, the connector pin is not seated properly. If the white plug won't plug snugly into the clock spring assembly, the retainer may not be seated properly.
(Easy to do. Hard to describe.)

It's a good method, but I don't think it will tell the WHOLE story in all cases. For example, you may have a situation where it's not necessary to replace the clockspring, and would just have to add a couple wires.

    Hey
it's technically 2 extra wires that come w/ the CC stalk.
No, there is nothing to do under the hood

BUT that would be only if your truck is "PRE-WIRED" from factory.
If my truck was an automatic like yours, the cost would have been less than $20.00 to add CC :)

if the truck is not pre-wired then you would need to add more wiring
and I don't know about needing to replace the clock spring.

The two torx bolts on the side are what hold the air bag.

If you watch my videos that I linked you should be able to do it and have a very good idea of what is involve.

    WARNING:
MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, before messing w/ the airbag

A little more on the clockspring. Here is the necessary pins on the clockspring for CC:
    upload_2020-12-4_21-6-18.jpg

So 1 & 3 is needed on the 4 pin connector on the clock spring, with 1 & 2 on the S8 connector going out to the ECM/ground.

Here is a closeup of the S8 connector which is marked (on Rockauto) as being for 'w/o':
    upload_2020-12-4_21-11-22.jpg

So it APPEARS to have the necessary S8 pins (the two that appears in the top of the image - it's upside down compared to the drawing). The problem is the selection of images don't show the 4 pin connector, BUT here is a closer view of the clockspring image I posted earlier in this thread:

    upload_2020-12-4_21-4-24.jpg

As you can see, it LOOKS like there is only one pin (#4?), so is missing the critical #3 pin.

So it looks like if you have the 4pin like the pic immediately above, you DEFINITELY have to swap it out. If you have the necessary pins on the 4 pin and S8 side (and there is continuity between #4 of the 4pin and #1 of the S8 / #3 of the 4pin and #2 of the S8), you should be fine (though you may need some extra wiring for the dash light depending on the year/model?).

I finished up my install today. My 2011 RC/MT base was not prewired, but between the wiring kit from eBay, switches from Rock Auto and the internal steering wheel harness from Toyota, I was able to get everything working. The Rostra instructions were also invaluable.
