I have a 2015 TRD Sport. It doesn't have Navigation, but it has a touchscreen and the Traffic App in the head unit displays a map with an icon that tracks the truck's location in real time, so clearly, all the hardware for Navigation is in place, and, if unless Toyota's manufacturing engineers are into wasting money in the factory, the difference should be entirely in software.

The dealer says I can purchase a Nav card for $169 which is essentially an SD card that's plug and play (presumably one has to access the back of the head unit to insert it.)

Has anyone done this or does anyone have details on this process?

My 2015 has the navigation, there is a spot to insert the SD card on the right bottom of the head unit next to the screen. I have the JBL audio upgrade though, so I'm not sure how different the head unit is.

You can buy the head unit with nav and install it but there's no way to add it to an existing head unit.
You just have to make sure you get the right one as there's one with JBL audio and one without JBL audio and they aren't interchangeable.
The nav units are pretty pricy even used.

You can buy the Toyota Nav card on eBay for around $50. I’ve upgraded twice that way.

I have a 2014, I bought a 2015 radio with navigation and swapped it. Set a search on eBay and you may get lucky.
