what's up y'all, I'm new to the Tacoma world website but I figure I give it a try and get some insides or suggestions on my Tacoma. I have a 2015 pyrite Mica SR5 4x4 double cab model. I'm looking to add some power to it. Any suggestions? When I drive a friends TRD off-road seems like it has more power than mine, why could that be?

I'm open to suggestions and what not.

The butt dyno isn't always accurate. Same engine and I believe same trans as long as you're comparing V6 to V6.

I think the only real source of power for the 4.0L is a supercharger.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.

Aside from that: if he's got lighter/smaller tires, no armor, no lift, etc. it's going to drive different than yours. That's just the nature of the beast. @jtweezy is correct only 2 ways to (realistically) "add power":

    1. Supercharger
    2. New motor (v8 swap)
To "sort of" add "power" you could also consider regearing, but that comes with big tradeoffs...

Get a supercharger. Or get urd headers they will give you a nice bump I love mine.

Do the 15s benefit from using premium fuel? Easiest thing I can think of that gets you a little more power.

Run 92 octane and get performance headers/exhaust. Your truck comes stock with a cold air intake so don't drink the Kool aid. Maybe get an AFE air filter.

Neither of these suggestions will give you any more performance. The best thing that running 91 octane gets you is fuel mileage, it also runs smoother at high temperatures. These motors aren't high compression so we do not need the added stability of a higher octane. Fact.

Headers will move your powerband at best and at worst screw it up completely. An exhaust will just sound cool. Intakes have zero performance benefit on these trucks beyond "sounding" cool. A high flow air filter is not going to help your truck "feel" more powerful.

Still going through the same cat and muffler.

They might add a few hp but it will only be a few percent and you won't even be able to feel it.

Toyota motors are tested and rated with 87 octane. The 4.0 v6 on high octane is about 4hp stronger. The urd headers are proven to increase power via dyno test A high flow air filter may not do a lot but it could improve throttle response like the secondary air filter removal creating a perceived gain in power . Also full exhaust wouldn't hurt assuming you don't screw up your back pressure. Read the article above. Everything counts in small amounts.

You're only going to see a noticeable increase in power with aftermarket headers if you're running forced induction. High flow headers don't do much of anything on a stock motor; without more air going in (forced induction), having more air going out won't do much other than sound better.

Throw a supercharger into the mix and it's a different story

This is not totally true. You need to read the fine print on those in house tests, they are all staged and bullshit. K&n claims big boost from their intake. Come on now.

Headers will make a difference if you are forced induction. They won't do squat on the stock motor.

Pretty sure someone ran a dyno on 87 vs 91 and max gain was about 9 HP. Intake/headers/y pipe/Exhaust will give you a power bump, if you do all of that, run 91 and buy my MAF Calibrator and you could see probably 30+ HP

I did everything I could do to another brand V6 one time sans forced induction.....Got a decent bump.....within 2 weeks I realized I had wasted 2 thousand bucks that could have went towards a V8 swap that would have made the sky the limit.
