    Hey all,

We just adopted a 9 mo. old Red Bone mix. She is extremely shy and just wants to hide. We have had her since last night. She wont eat or drink water and will not budge from the same spot. I have never had a dog do this. Do you all have any suggestions as to how I can make her feel more comfortable?

    Any help is appreciated.

Let her be for now. Put food and water across the room-She will get hungry and she'll move around when she does.
    Was she a rescue adoption??

Ok thank you. I will give that a try. She is a rescue adoption. Was found when she was a few weeks old wandering around a farm and the guy had the pound take her in. Shes been in the foster home since then. Unfortunately the lady that fostered her didn't work with her at all on anything.

I adopted a dog like this 4 years ago. First night i took her outside on a leash she freaked and pulled out of her collar, she came back two days later...the hardest thing was getting her on a leash because she would get scared everytime i approached her. It took a few days for her to be comfortable, the only thing that really helped was basiclly leaving her alone and just trying to be mellow, no loud noises or fast movements. She is a great dog now, still a little skiddish and barks at strangers. I think she was most likely abused as a puppy

Shes prolly stressed in a new environment which is common.. However make sure to monitor her because it could be a sign of parvo which is extremely lethal. One of my dogs acted the same and by day three we took him to the vet and sure enough.

I work with several rescues - do a lot of transports. What you describe is not at al uncommon. Your dog has been through a lot and is certainly upset and stressed. Giv her los of love and time to adapt. She'll come around.

She's just scared. Just put food and water out for her then leave her alone. If you tell her she's a good dog when she's acting the way she is now, it will reinforce the behavior because she'll think it's what you want. So go about your business. She'll get the idea eventually that she won't be hurt and she'll get curious enough to start exploring. Good luck! What's her name? Pics?

    The better coast
If you put the food and water close and slowly move it away, that helps a little to so she doesnt have to make the long trek across the room all in one go.

    All else fails....bacon :p

thanks guys. Good to know this isn't uncommon. Over the last hour or so, she has been a little more interested in the other 2 dogs running around and playing. Still didn't move but she was at least watching them. I will post pics of her in a few.

Just looked at her papers. I have to correct myself on what type of breed she is. Papers say pure bred Redbone Coon Hound.

I have come to realize she responds to me more than others. My mom just tried to take her outside to go to the bathroom (she ate a little bit and had some water a few hours ago apparently). Ida wouldn't budge for my mom. I tried with her, no problems besides her wanting to hide again after she got outside. She also takes treats out of my hand and no one else.

my parents got a similar dog (rescue) two years ago... she was very skittish around everyone, it took several months for her to slowly warm up to everyone and trust them.... i'd imagine it's pretty common, since they're afraid and in a foreign environment..

Awww :) yeah just let her be for awhile like the others said, she will warm up to ya in time. Dogs are very observant of new people, some come around within a few minutes and others sometimes take longer. But she is still young enough, once she comes around she will be eager to learn about you and her new home.

i learned this from friends dogs. perfect example, yesterday at our local tw meet. manwithoutaplans g/f's roommate has a boxer that i have never gotten closer than 10 feet to. she is only really comfortable with women. she barks and runs with her legs between her legs. i have been there a handful of times and she has never warmed up to me. yesterday she came into the garage where we were at. something she has never done. so i called her softly and turned away from her. little by little she got closer and as i was petting the pit gus, she let me put my hand in front of her face. she sniffed and soon enough i was giving her belly rubs. she still ran after hearing loud noises, but came right back when we quieted down. and she ran off when anyone walked towards her.

OP everything posted seems to be correct, she'll get better every day. Also, she's a good looking pup.
