Advice about making my speaker sound better

So I recently purchased a set of hsk 165. I got them used from a friend for about half the price. Not sure how old they are. They play and sound decently fine. I am using a



ARC Audio 2080 XXD 2-Channel Car Amp.
Well I got everything in on a saturday. Couldn't get the 6x9 to 6.5 conversion kit from anywhere. So i bought my own thin mdf and attempted to make my own. Well needless to say its ghetto there are gaps around the speaker and the mdf doesn't completely cover the 6x9 hole.

I believe the amp is pushing about 80 rms to each speaker. I have noticed when I turn up the volume on my pioneer head unit to higher volumes I get a bit of distortion and my clarity suffers. So I cut backthe 40hz area on the head unit to -12db problem solved but for speakers that were 500 new I feel like something is still lacking. Would buying the proper say speaker mounts and possibly sound deadening the doors make them sound better. Also I have a low pass and high pass filter on the amp. high i believe goes from 65 to 250. Low pass goes from 50-250. I have both just set in the middle and honestly adjusting either doesn't seem to be making a difference. I'm running the amp on full range. I have set it to high pass when I had my friends twelves on my back seat but after selling those I needed full range cause it sounded wierd with almost no bass at all. I feel I get more significant changes in sound when adjusting the headunits hz areas. But honestly I don't know that much to adjust all those so I just usually run a preset. My head unit is a pioneer avh 2500bt btw. I mean the speakers do get loud they sound pretty clear at lower levels. Yet something is missing I can't place what it is. Like I believe something in the midrange is lacking. Any help or possible advice would be appreciated.

My gain is set a little above half.

I just noticed there is a small crack/rip in the right woofer its on the rubbery part where the cone connects to the housing. Like the very edge.

Either way, get the right mounts. I bought mine on Ebay for about 20 bucks..nice resin ones and they fit perfect.

 

Good point it could be resonance from a the mount. I'll probably end up matting my doors to help out further.

 

Not a bad idea, but first things first.

I just used the adapters with mine, Rockford Fosgate 6x9's with a 90x2 amp and no issues at all with sound. Got mine on Ebay from seller autoware302. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just a good product at a fair price.

That all said, the rip you mentioned is another cause for concern. Try cutting that side off on the balance and see if you still hear the same thing.
