So I’ve test driven a couple of these when they first came out and like most others hated the trans/engine tune.

Just took a new ‘19 on a short test drive cause the salesman had an appointment with another customer. (Maybe 7 minutes, never over 45 mph) I liked how it felt for the most part, the difference to me between the older trucks and this one is like a Lexus IS350 in a shitty eco mode vs sport mode.

Is this newer tuned truck what this thing should have been the whole time? Or will this new tune revert back after learning your driving like others have said and become pain to drive again? There’s a used 2018 that is the same exact specs I have my eye on and if I can TSB it and it drive great then I am extremely interested now.

Note: I don’t need a truck, I have no pressure to buy a new one so give me your honest experiences.

On both my 2016 and 2018 the truck was awkward and clunky for the first 1500 miles. The learning actually smoothed it out to something I liked in both instances.

However, I take pause if you say you don't need a truck. What makes you interested in one, may I ask? This vehicle is great fun if you use it for the things it's meant to do, but people who just use it as a daily and nothing more tend to hate it. This is a vehicle designed for a weekend in the woods, not a night on the town, so to speak.

I can guarantee you the new 2019 will drive on day one like it will drive on day 1000. Nobody here can guarantee that the TSB on an earlier model will do the same thing. Nobody here knows exactly what Toyota did for the new models.
If you want one that will drive the way you want, buy a new one. It won't revert.
But, you don't need a truck lol...

Also, most others didn't hate the tune at all. Only a few did, as evidenced by the sales numbers increasing to record levels instead of decreasing.

OV tune has probably sold less than 5K tunes out of 750K trucks. That's not most.

I’m spoiled by sports car manuals. I didn’t like how long it takes to shift the Tacoma but may try it once more

Take your time, test drive some different trucks at different dealerships.

Test drive Canyon, Colorado, Frontier. Test the larger trucks too.

You can figure out what works best for you.

If you didn't like the Tacoma originally though, that should be a good indicator of what you should not be getting, imo....

    Good luck.

It’s not a sports car so don’t go into it thinking it should shift like one. It’s a truck. Throws are longer and more effort to shift. Mine shifts smooth at all rpm ranges. Wouldn’t trade it for a auto if it were given to me.

I don’t need one because I have one that can transport my bicycle/kayak whatever, but it is growing old and the suspension is harsh. I’d be interested in consolidating my truck and daily driver into owning a single vehicle but am not rushed to do so yet.

Maybe this needs to be the first post to each of these thread types. Test drive all the other brands first. That may give a better reference on the Tacoma.

This is what I was more curious on I suppose, I hadn’t read for sure if anyone knew if the TSB on older trucks would match the improvements for the 2019s.

Nobody except Toyota truly knows. Couple that with the fact that most people have no problems with the way the truck shifts.
Test drive and if you like buy that exact one.
But, I agree with the above post that if you didn't like the truck initially you probably won't like it now.

If you have time, wait until mid-year 2020. There will be some interesting developments happening after all the new players in both the SUV and midsize truck markets show up. I certainly will be kicking tires and visiting the occasional auto show in the next few, even though I have no plans to get another for a long while.

The only thing I didn’t like was the unresponsiveness of the throttle and lugging engine on my initial drives. That felt fixed on my short drive which is why the truck is in my sights again.

If I got a truck other than Tacoma it’d probably be a Ram, I really don’t like any other midsize offerings. But it may be smart to just wait it out like you say.

If kayaking and biking are your "truck stuff" activities, the 4 runner isn't a bad choice either. But again I'd take my time if I went that route, just to see if the bronco actually lives up to the hype.
