My 07 Sand Black Pear DC Taco has the typical rust and paint fade on the roof that so many others have had. There are some other threads but I'm wondering what the longer term experience was from those who DIY'd it. Please don't suggest a pro job, it's not an option I'm considering. At minimum I want to clean up/stop the rust and get a black coat back over it. I MAY go the wrap or bedliner route depending on how I feel about it after the basic job. I'm after function with passable aesthetics, its the roof after all, i never see it!

If your work has held up over time:
What products did you decide on using (ie Rustoleum, Duplicolor, et..)?
Which sequence of products (ie Rust reformer, primer, base, topcoat)?

any other tips? I know prep is key so i will be in all the work there. Thanks for your constructive comments.

If you sand it all down well- ospho any rust, prep it, wipe it all down and use some 2k epoxy primer, available in rattle can, sand it, then use duplicolor rattle can, then top with 2k clear also available in a rattle can.
I’ve had amazing success using this method on numerous vehicles.
    Hope this helps!

I'm curious too so I'll be watching this. Probably going to get a bro deal on a pro refinish but maybe DIY it if others have had good long-term results. I was thinking of painting the roof white on my black truck, for help with heat from the AZ sun. Might make it look like a skunk or a cop vehicle, though.

yes it is. There is an internal chamber that you break, and the two parts mix.
    Made by SprayMax.

yeah it’s good stuff. I’ve painted multiple panels, and motorcycle parts with it.

I'm finding mixed reviews on the ospho and Spraymax 2k primer (i've decided their topcoat is definitely the way to go based on all i've read). Do you have specific reasons for these two products vs using the products Duplicolor has (which would seem to be more designed to work with the base coat paint)?

ospho is just to kill the rust. Evaporust is another good rust killing product. I usually sand, wipe with ospho, sand again, then wipe with naphtha, or other prep solvent.

Duplicolor is readily available, but there are multiple companies that sell color matched spray cans. Your local auto paint store typically will even mix it, and put it in an aerosol can for you.

the 2k primer actually seals the panel- versus a standard primer.
