I have a Leer 100XR coming in a couple of weeks for my ‘22 OR and have been reading through all of the pre-prep work to be done before installing. This is the first I’ve seen someone mention the TC Bed Stiffeners. Do you think it was a big factor in yours not leaking? Is it the rear channel bed stiffeners you’re referring to?

Since this thread popped up again, I can confirm that this fix 100% stopped the leaks that I had.

I had read that with the weight of the shell it was causing some beds to crack. When I installed my bed stiffeners the back was out of square by a half inch straight from the factory.

Another issue is that the flexing of the bed (especially if the truck is used off road) can cause the fiberglass cap to crack. I was advised against buying a certain shell by a cap dealer for that reason.

FWIW - I did all of the under-rail/bed waterproofing AND installed a pair of TC bed stiffeners prior to having a Leer 100XR installed this summer. Leaks like a sieve - despite my best efforts and several attempts by the dealer. Plenty of decent reasons to add bed stiffeners, but don't think keeping your cap water tight is one of them.

On the other hand, absolutely amazing how the bed from a fresh from the factory truck can arrive so out of square (Mine was just over 1/4")! The 2022 MX Tacoma line put out the worst body work I've ever seen. Don't get me started on panel gaps and paint quality....

So the next question would be if this a Leer manufacture defect or a Leer dealer/installer incompetence?

I would say it is more of a design issue coupled with the limitations posed by the cap/bed interface. There is no way that my bed would be dry without the tailgate weatherstrip. Whose responsibility is that?

For what it's worth, back in the old days, there was a shell company called Glasstite that made a shell that had a rear door that wrapped around the back of the shell and the tailgate which was probably very effective at keeping water out when closed as well as keeping the back of the bed and the tailgate dry when open. It seemed like a great design to me.

Here is a random picture that I found on the web:
