this. a meticulously detailed vehicle is going to net the highest valuation. but mods are either worth zero, or like the dealer indicated, some mods like the topper and lift can equal a negative valuation.

if you've got time, return the entire truck to bone stock, and detail it like you were private selling it beforehand. then see what they're willing to give you as a trade, get angry, take the money, finish the deal, and feel ripped off.

    Trading in is a rip-off.
Dealers have to make $$ - id rather keep it myself.

    And guess who writes kbb...?

Sell private to get yourself the most value altogether...

I recently sold my patents Series 100 LC and got more than 50% more than dealers' top price. - I was offered more by the sales staff every time! (-And way more than kbb).

This is even more a point if you have any sort of special attribute - a special edition, a manual gearbox, a special color, etc.

Dealers buy on generic specs. Nothing more.
Buyers look for a bit more...

private sale does have it's own disadvantages though.

i'd personally rather deal with a slimy dealer and get less than deal with most people.

If you’re trading it in, convert it back to stock and sell everything else. Like everything and put that money towards the new one.
Private sale all just depends on the buyer and if the add ons is something they are looking for imo

I can tell you as a police officer and just someone who was trying to sell my ZR2 , it’s a cesspool out there of people trying to rip you off in any way possible. Yes you will make more privately but to me it wasn’t worth sifting through the pool of scammers and scum bags. Dealer offered me 25k , which is like 27 with sales tax credit. Carvana paid me 30 k ! It was so easy to sell to them. My ZR2 is up for 35. Don’t know if they will get it

Pull EVERYTHING off. The dealer isn’t going to give you squat for any of it.

Speaking from experience, pay off the truck before you even think of landing a new contract.

Last week, I went in to a HUGE dealer just to see what they would do. So I go to Keyes Toyota and tell them I would like to know what they thought my truck was worth. So I’m waiting in the lounge and the fella that helped me originally brings the sales manager. He asks, “How much were you looking to sell your truck for?” “$32,000” “For a 5 year old truck?” “Well, it only has 25,000 miles on it, and as you saw, the truck is in great condition.” At this point, I barely got a glimpse on the sheet of the $28,000 they were offering, same as kbb. “I’m trying to save you the time as every dealer is the same. No one is going to offer you $32,000.” “I was at Simi Valley Toyota yesterday and they offered me $32,000 and I know for a fact you would take this truck quickly, being it’s paid off. And not only that, they were willing to take off another $3,000 off the truck I was looking to trade in for. But that got me at $11,800, not the $10,000 contract I was looking for. They ALMOST made it happen. So is every dealer the same?” I then quickly look at the fella who originally helped me and said, “Thanks for your time Tony.”

If you have to drive for a good dealer, do so.

It all comes down to time and money. Place a value on all the stuff you wanna sell. Place a value on the time to take it off and sell it. Let’s say for example: 3k 6 months to get rid of. Or trade your truck and the dealer gave you a great deal on the new one, let’s say 2k off. I’ll eat the 1k extra I could have sold the parts for just not deal with all the hassle to take off and sell.

Maximizing trade in value means nothing without considering the purchase prices as well. They could give you $10,000 more than you expected for your trade in but it means nothing if they are simply adjusting the purchase price by $10,000 or more.

When trading a vehicle in it is the delta, the difference between the trade-in and purchase price that matters.

If you want 30 for your trade-in to pay 50 for your new purchase the delta is 20. That’s all that matters. If they give you 40 for your trade-in and charge you 60 for the new one you’re there. The delta is what matters.

This is it, exactly. All that matters.
But, to minimize your difference in price, always trade in a stock unit. That will maximize your price. No lift or BS.

Have you driven a 4runner? I don't want to be an asshole on a Sunday night but.....

My wifes is a fucking pig. That 4.0 with the 5 speed is a fuck show that makes the 3.5 with a 6 seem amazing. Seriously... its a fucking tank. It gets 3 mpg less then my tacos. It's lucky to see 14 mpg in the rockies. More like 12. And that fucking 5 speed... don't get me started. Did you test drive a 4runner? It's a very different experience.

It wins hands down at packing the family up to go skiing. But it's not fun to drive. Not like your taco. It feels top heavy, it's constantly lugging and those high RPMs out of a 4.0 are fine. But all I can hear when that motor winds up is my fucking change sliding out the tail pipe.

Can’t even to begin to list all the vehicles I’ve passed on because of aftermarket shit. A lift is the #1 offender. Yeah, I put all sorts of aftermarket stuff on myself but I take it all off if/when I’m trading. I don’t want anything I know someone else has monkeyed around with….especially suspension.

IMHO it’s always best to bring it to stock condition, modifications usually bring the value down.

Also, is selling privately a possibility?

Remove all the bolt ons and sell privately, and trade truck in as close to stock as you can. Everyone's right, they do little if anything to increase value at trade in time. However, do trade the truck in and DONT sell privately. What many of them don't know, or are forgetting, is that you have massive sales tax savings if you do. Let's say your tax is 10% like it is where I am located...$50k 4runner you buy with a pile of cash your gonna pay $50k + 10% ($5k) + whatever your interest rate is. Trade the Tacoma in...say you get $30k value...your tax burden on the 4runner is gonna be $50-30k = $20k. So, not only does it knock down price of the car it also alters sales tax. $20k+10% (2k)+ whatever interest rate you get.

Paying off won’t expedite anything on the dealers end. Regardless of what it is, they all go through safety inspection, detail, LOF which will take a few days. Dealers will sell as soon as they can regardless of title status and regardless of what the regulations state unfortunately.

I sold all my previous vehicles on Craigslist, no issues. But then again, my last vehicle sale was almost 5 years ago. I’m sure things changed.

I’m not talking on the dealers end. I’m talking on his end. He’ll have more leverage and less debt.
