^ This A good dealer will do a dealer to dealer swap if they don't have the vehicle. Just tell them what you want and don't settle. If they want the sale they will make it happen and if not move on to another dealership.

My Dealer did Dealer trades for my last 2 Tacoma's, they grabbed one off the lot and put it on a trailer and then went over 300 Miles to trade and get what I wanted.

Intriguing. However I will see what I can do locally first before venturing 17 hours away.

Update: Dealership's replied he couldn't do the price I was asking for. Said I was looking to pay $1000 under invoice. Came back with $37,875. Only $750 off the MSRP of $38,625. He gave me the same discount as I could have gotten myself by clicking the "Specials" button following me around the page as I scroll. Now I'm contemplating how I should reply. Whether I should just reply with a bunch of middle finger emojis or not.

You don't have to reply at all. If he wants to sell you a truck bad enough he will contact you.

If you are willing to come as far as LA check out Yokem.

    Don't close any doors.

Can't fault the man for choosing not to discount an in-demand model as much as you'd like him to. That's his business decision to make.

It's still frustrating though, especially if you don't have a lot of nearby dealers fighting for business.

I'd suggest widening your net. Plane tickets aren't that expensive when bought in advance.

This is an excellent write-up. Pay attention to the writer's details. I personally would use an Internet sales guy at a volume dealership. Your greatest financial advantage would be on an already "floor planned" vehicle; meaning one on a lot. That can be anywhere within your dealer's region. In my case, it was a vehicle, that already passed through mass production, in route to port, and slated for a dealership, in my dealer's regional group. If you catch a vehicle, that has passed through MP, but hasn't passed through port yet, you hit the jackpot. It will be easy to add/subtract port installed options. Note: you likely can't change factory installed options though. If you can't find a vehicle, with your specification, on a lot, or on the way, you have to either sit tight, or order. Let the internet sales guy find it for you. He/she has great resources at their fingertips, and they want the sales numbers. If you find the right volume salesperson, you are not impulsive, and you are willing to fight a little, you can have your vehicle for invoice or below. Last tip, make sure you have secured financing, before you reach the table, or you have been caught with your pants down.

That is what Costco showed me, also, but the local dealer said that even though they had excluded the Tacoma from the Costco program they would sell me a Tacoma for the same deal as any other vehicle bought through the Costco program. I am confident that gave me the best price that could have been had for the truck. So you might identify dealers listed as participating for other Toyota models and check with them.

To get what I wanted required ordering and waiting. I ordered in early January and was told at that time that the dealer already had an order pending for one in the same configuration that was scheduled to be built in March, and it would be mine. The truck was delivered in late May.

Trucar is helpful also. I used them and scored a pretty good deal.

Costco programs can vary apparently. Although the TRD OR was in the program here, I easily beat the Costco price by $1100 using my conventional tactics a couple weeks ago.

So do check out the Costco pricing, but don't assume it's the best deal available. It might be or it might not be. Verify for yourself.

Taco as and 4runners are excluded from The Costco program. They don't have to discount them, so they don't.
Dealers that don't do a lot of volume will not give you a deal.
    Dealers that do, will
If you have to order from allocation, you should absolutely not have to pay anything more than invoice.

    Careful with the generalizations.

Tacomas are included in the program in Atlanta in all but the Pro trim which is excluded. I saw the sheet with my own eyes two weeks ago.

obviously that's just here and doesn't necessarily apply to other markets.

That could be..Because it has always been taco, 4Runner, and the new highlander
Those 3 don't need help selling so they exclude them.
So, how far back of invoice were they going on the Tacoma, since you saw it yourself

@JS760 Invoice plus $500 on the DCSB OR, plus another $925 Southeast Toyota Admin fee related to the Costco program. SR5s at invoice plus the fee.

For those who had to special order their configuration, did you have to put down a deposit? If so, how much? Is it refundable if you find it somewhere else or if the dealer doesn't deliver? What kind of documentation do you receive to "reserve" your truck?

Good news guys! I was able to find a Tacoma in the exact configuration I wanted, with the unwanted addition of floor mats, on a lot! Buts its only $208 more so big deal. Plus they're willing to sell at invoice! However, their invoice price is about $650 more than my invoice price. He also gave me an OTD price but it included a $299 tint free and $399 doc fee. Can I negotiate the tint fee off entirely because I'm going to have to retint it darker anyway? Can I also get a lower doc fee? Or is that pushing it too much since they're already selling to me at invoice +$650?

Ideally, in a perfect world, I'd like to get the truck at my invoice price and without the $299 tint fee for a discount of ~$950. But I'd be okay with invoice +$500 with no tint free.

By the way, thank you everyone so much for the help, tips, etc. You guys are awesome.

I'm curious too. One dealership wanted a $1000 deposit from me for the truck coming off the line. Another dealer wanted only $250 for the same truck. The dealership wanting the $1000 deposit said it was refundable over the phone. But I'm still skeptical since it's not in writing.
