Use a socket over the top of that motive filter wrench. I guarantee you'll strip it using an extension or that impact at some point.

like i said earlier-- take note of the torque you put it to, and update this thread your next oil change. you'll be cursing again, but at yourself!

Any reason y’all know it would be dripping oil aggressively. Had to run home and switch vehicles because I noticed at a stop it was dripping from the skid plate. I ran the vehicle in the driveway and didn’t see leaks.

I know I put the gasket on. I know I torqued the cap to 25ft/lbs. I torqued the filter drain cap to 25. Did I over torque it and it’s seeping from there?

haven’t had a chance to run it and watch but will tonight

Two gaskets, one around the oil filter casing, one on the bottom cap. Both need to be securely in their grooves, with no minor debris that would create a bypass. You can try reming the oil filter canister, carefully wash the grooves, the gaskets, hold both in a tray instead of placing on the ground before installation.

Find material you can use to check the oil filter house for roundness. Start at one point and rotate to all points to check if there is a warped point.

I am not suggesting you were stupid-sloppy before, but if being perhaps-too careful this time works, you at least know that you did *something* wrong last time and know to be careful in the future.

iirc, when re-installing the housing, sometimes the upper/larger gasket starts to get caught before actually seating in the vehicle-side groove, so double check that your 25ft/lbs was with the housing fully seated, not 25ft/lbs trying to drive the seal up into the vehicle-side part.

I didn't catch if OP got a new cap or re-used the one that all that force was applied to it, to remove. I would not have used an impact wrench on it. I would have used a breaker bar. If OP is using the original cap, it could be cracked.

The plastic housing are mostly durable but you're right...an impact wrench may do some damage.

OP, if you reside in San Diego area, you can have the composite cap from our RX350, no charge. I kept it as a backup but I really doubt I’ll ever have to use it. Our 07 ES350 with same engine and an oem alum housing is at 300K and I’ve had no issues with the cap. That is what prompted me to replace the composite housing in our RX350.

Your buddy is wrong. And some oil will leak from the drain plug cover without the o-ring, but not ‘agressively’. I still think your cap may have a crack.

I have not had time to go exploring and I'm 70 so stupid question?
Where is the filter located on the Gen 3 V-6? My gen 2s were right on top and easy to get to.

yea it was getting dark when i was doing this and it was my first time, didnt realize there was a gasket seated where the drain cap sits on the filter cap. i cannibalized it off the old housing cap and have had it running in the driveway for a good 10 minutes and nothing yet. going to go around the area and then take it to get washed. love having the hood up and oil draining out of my 23 taco. thats the 03 diesels job

also when trying to remove the drain cap, the entire filter cap started twisting so i think it will hold the torque spec, or im hoping. only made it about 60 miles.

i can also tell a difference with the amsoil, alot smoother.

If I recall correctly, the drain cap torque is less than the housing, less than 15ft lbs, I am pretty sure. And I believe the torque value is stamped on the housing.

18ft-lbs for the cap but ya if it's still leaking check the cap, alot of counterfeits on Amazon and counterfeits tend to leak among other issues

Yeah...it's different...but I use my retired military benefits by going to the Auto Hobby Shop on Dover, AFB Delaware.

$8/hour for stall usage; I just have to clean/sweep/mop the area once done.

I buy all the supplies and use some of the tools. I don't have to get rid of any oil either!

Had this same stuck filter cap issue doing my first oil change this weekend. ToyotaCare expired, so this is the first non-dealer oil change. My plastic filter cap already had 2 of the teeth on each side missing from the dealer shearing them off, so my filter cap removal tool could only grip onto one tooth on each side. Had to use an 18" breaker bar, but the two teeth ended up shearing off without the cap budging. Thank you dealer techs.

When those two teeth sheared off, it cracked the filter cap and I saw oil leaking out. I was able to get a lot of force on the bar before the cap broke, so I was doubtful that drilling into the cap and putting a screwdriver / bar through it would provide enough leverage to loosen it. I had a buddy grab the aluminum replacement filter cap for me from a nearby auto part store, and I ended up drilling, hammering, sawing, and chiseling the rest of the filter cap off for about 3 hours. I was extremely slow and careful not to touch the engine block portion that the filter cap threads into so that I avoided a much more expensive repair, so I definitely don't recommend this approach - but it worked in the end.

From what I've read regarding the aluminum filter cap replacement, as long as I'm careful with not cross-threading/galling the newly introduced aluminum - aluminum interface of the threads, shouldn't have any more problems with oil changes going forward. Never having the dealership change my oil again...

Sorry to hear about your dealership experience.

Onto the investigation of the broken cap.

The housing removal wrench should not make contact with the winglets. Photo below is from this weekend...I still have the plastic filter housing and the wrench for fit check.

The bottom portion of the housing (with the ridges on top in this photo) is what makes the most contact. Not sure how the winglets are getting broken off because they shouldn't make contact with the wrench.

Here's the other side. The notches should match up on both sides.
