Has anyone upgraded just the speakers in a 3rd Gen with JBL? I searched the forums first and could not find an answer.

I had purchased a set of Focal ISS 165 components for the front and a set of Focal RCX 165 2 ways for the rear in my 2017 Tacoma with entune premium without JBL.

My 2018 replacement Tacoma has the JBL system with the premium and tech package. I had everything ready to install in my 2017 without JBL and then my truck got totaled before I had a chance to do the install.

My question is whether it would be worthwhile to install those speakers in my new truck? Will the 4 ohm speakers work With the 2 ohm JBL head unit and amp? Is there any place to buy tweeter wiring harnesses for the JBL system?

The 4ohm speakers will “work” as in they will play audio, but you will get literally half the power output from the amp (which means about half the volume)

In my experience, the JBL system isn’t worth upgrading until you can gut it and replace the amp, sub, and all speakers.

Thanks I appreciate the advice. Based on that I won’t bother with switching the speakers out for now.

The Focal speakers you purchased have a high sensitivity, in excess of 92 dB. Try installing the speakers, they may surprise you. Think of it as getting prepared for the full system upgrade.

idk, for what it's worth, I threw some 4ohm 6x9 door speakers I had laying around in the basement in place of the stock JBL and it's a significant gain in clarity and low end volume. Overall, the system seems just as loud or louder than before. And definitely more clear. My guess is while the stock JBL are 2ohm, these 4ohm I threw in are efficient enough to sound decent.

I know this isn't the 100% "right way" of doing it. But with a zero dollar investment for me, it was worth trying out. And, anecdotally - I'm pleased with the results.

Also replaced the tweeters (2ohm), rear door (4ohm) and stock sub (dual 2ohm) with other random speakers I had laying around from various vehicles over the years and definitely can say it's a huge improvement. My full speaker replacement is as follows:
    • replaced tweeters with 2ohm
    • replaced front doors with 4ohm
    • replaced rear doors with 4ohm
    • replaced sub with dual 2ohm (RF P3)
Pretty funny the speakers I had collecting dust in the basement sound so much better than what Toyota dubs as "premium" audio. give me a break..
