Didn't read the three pages but here is the cliff notes version of what you really need to know.

    1. Not enough truck. As configured, you will be exceeding your truck's towing limits. Not opinion. Math.

    2. Once up around 6,000 GVWR on a camper, any standard, base model full-size pickup will tow circles around the Toy Taco and do it legally with a higher margin of safety and better fuel mileage.

    3. If you search long enough you will find someone that tows same or more and has lived through it. That is called Confirmation Bias and you will feel better about exceeding the Toy Taco's capabilities ;-)

Do a net search, Byerly and others appear to rent. At the very least rent one close to the size and weight. And in regards to size, don't forget frontal area, all that drag up top has just as big of an impact as the other factors. I'll warn you though, I was dead set on buying a camper, but after adding up all the other costs, like taxes, storage, and insurance, I chose not to buy and just rent, for as little as I'd actually use one.

Thank you everyone for the help i think i will keep looking around until we find the right one now. probably just slightly smaller. I love this truck and cant see myself upgrading to a tundra anytime soon.

The renting idea is awesome. We were supposed to do that with our Tundra. Instead, I went off load ratings, trailer weight and figured it would be fine since “others” towed bigger campers.

    That was an expensive oops.

Please help me figure out the weights on this truck! I have a 2018 Pro. Door sticker states 1000 lb cargo limit on the tire sticker. Is this limit due to the tires? Would LT tires up the limit? Everything I have found on the internet says the payload for the Pro is 1175 lbs. What's with the discrepancy.

If 1000 lbs is my limit, I don't see how any family of four could tow shit with this truck? Myself and the crew weigh in at roughly 650lbs plus side steps, cargo tri-fold, tools, etc at around 150 lbs. That leaves me with 200 lbs of tongue/bed weight currently and my two boys are growing kids so it will diminish quickly. That's barely enough for a little utility trailer much less something four folks would want to sleep in.

I've been looking at Class C motorhomes primarily, but I would at least like the option of a nice trailer to appease the wife's safety concerns. Did I do all this wrong, or is this Tacoma not capable?

What your sticker says, is what your optioned truck has, there's no real way to raise that dot rating.

Also, your math looks correct. Seems like a full size, or better yet, maybe
even a one ton is what you need.
I bought the double cab for the dogs, very few short trips with more than one adult, and to store/lock items- I would think most have too, and ones that are actually planning on, not only hauling 4 people, but towing a trailer, start at full size. DC is essentially a 2 door hatchback with a part time people hauler capability.

No! It is tires, brakes, frame, suspension, transmission.... I just can't believe what some people are towing with these little trucks. I have a square drop trailer that weighs 1,260 dry and it tows easily. Even so, you can feel it in the mountains and gas mileage sucks.

That's exactly what some myself included are trying to say in this and other towing related threads. The tacoma is a nice little truck for what it is. Daily driver, grocery getter, jeep type of use and weekend warrior to home depot. What it isn't is a real half ton or 3/4 ton truck. Just the way it is. It's not bashing the truck just the reality of the situation.

Here we are 9 months later and I'm in your shoes, the 213 seems to tick a lot of our boxes...

What did you end up doing? Did you get the 213 or something else?

    Cheers!

Here is a towing test between a 2019 Ranger and a 2019 Tacoma. There is a lot of good info in there.
