Either that or go for a swim. Provided the pool is heated of course.

I made some calls to a few friends trying to find the right kinda lawyer for this (and you know lawyers, they won't comment on an area outside of their expertise). Primarily I want to know if he can legitimately file a lien for this in california without a signed contract, without a business license, etc... It doesn't seem likely, but as others have pointed out... California.

Really hoping he just deposits the check and I can move on with my life.

If he does not deposit the check within 30 days of writing it, I will put a stop payment on it.

I will reach out to him, and try to settle up with him one more time without escalating things. As part of this, I will require a dually signed termination of services and payment received in full for services rendered. If he doesn't agree to that for whatever reason, I will let him know that I've done my research on him and the several different names of his company, court cases, required licenses, and that I'll be reporting him to all relevant authorities. Hoping that will change his tune without getting a lawyer involved.

Worst part of all of this. He drives a Tacoma. Just out there doing Tacoma owners a disservice.

day 1 on next door, finally found something juicy

    https://nextdoor.com/p/9MCSf-pQt7m-?extras=OTExNzkwMzQ=

guy is asking for money on a gofundme to get a place to stay for his family because he lost his house and the comments are very bashful lol, lot of people think it is a scam and many are referring to government agencies that can help him. I do not see anywhere where he mentioned how he lost his condo. I feel bad but i know the agencies in massachusetts and new hampshire and they would help him greatly, idk why he isnt going to them first

Edit: i found how he lost his condo in the comments: "condos were privately owned the owner was selling the condo we weren’t aware of that and we were month to month the owner wouldn’t do a year lease when we moved in three years ago. We are still waiting for the insurance money to come in from the accident. Her brother stated we could stay for six months just to save up money after being their for a week and a half he told us he was behind on rent and bills so I gave them what I had to help them out since they where helping us out then a few days later he said we had to leave by the 13th or he was getting evicted so that is why I’m asking for help because we lost the condo I lost the money I had saved to help him out and now we have no money saved and no where to go so I apologize our situation is giving a bunch of red flags we weren’t expecting any of this to happen."

We don’t need to turn this thread into copy and pasting next door… otherwise it will have a thousand pages in a day from all the crap posted on next door.

Is your pool guy asian by chance? wondering if it's my old boss who tried to recruit me into his pool cleaning business years back.

I wouldn't worry too much about a mechanic's lien....$650 is not worth placing an unsubstantiated lien. He will lose more placing it and fighting it than getting paid.

OP, sorry to hear this sequence of events.

Makes me reconsider having an in-ground pool installed.

    Hope it all works out.

Jan 15th update- Still has not deposited the check :notsure:

Additionally... We took a water sample to Leslie's- the water test results were roughly "you're not swimming in this water are you?" followed by, "the water REALLY needs to be changed out".

(Free) chlorine super high, Ph high, and minerals were through the roof. Calcium, copper (probably from the high PH eating the spa heater), and salt.

Sounds like there are some companies that will come out, test the water on their own, and then run the pool water through an RO setup on site to retain a large portion of the water... Something like 80% retention, $20 loss in brine. Refilling 20% of the pool sounds better than 100% of it.

In the meantime, no more chlorine tablets for awhile, and trying to get the Ph back within a readable test range with a few rounds of muriatic acid premixed with pool water.

    Home ownership is "fun" :frusty:

Truly fucking festive. That said once you get it to where it should be, you're golden. And yes refilling 20% ain't shit, I have to do that every spring at opening. I had to fully drain when my liner got thrashed and it sucked.

My first year was a learning experience to say the least but I'm on top of everything since. Watch the little things and usually won't be big issues.

That said it's mostly about the use it gets. I open mid April and close late September, but I use mine every damn day when it's the season.
