right.. this is what i want to do.. but.. like i said.. how they did the collector.. which affects the 3" pipe afterwards.. makes it very difficult to get a resonator in there.

I may need to have them re-do the collector..

It does look like yours is more of oval tubing after the merge. I am going to check if I have a current picture of my N/A exhaust. If not, I Wil get one when I get home.

    ok. no worries if not.

I called them to have it done today..

told them i was wanting a flange after the collector, and then an 18" resonator before the muffler. they said no problem, we were on the same page.. then they called back saying that might not work since they routed the 3" piping up high.. and may not be able to fit a resonator there. I told them I would prefer it there over in the Y.. and if they needed to reroute it to make it work, to do that.

They are going to call back and see what we can do.

if not.. whats the differences and benefits over having it after the collector vs having 2 on each side of the Y?

    Here you go Moose.

You'll have to have the shop add in some sort of flange, if you want to make it easier to pull your exhaust in pieces.

ETaco23, still has his OEM flanges, which simulate a flex coupling.

The only difference that makes a monetary difference is that it is harder to install a resonator per bank than a single one after the Y. Once everything has already been installed. In hydraulics, having the "muffler" closer to the source is better than further away. For the sake of the exhausts, having one after the Y, has worked extremely well.

ok, so this shop is a bunch of fucktards..

they tell me this morning they can add the resonator in.. they will do whats needed to make it fit. then, after my parents drive an hour to get it there (im at work) they say they cant.. and I will have to bring it in saturday. they also said the resonator will do nothing as the Aero is a "straight through" design and isnt really a muffler. this was all told to me from my stepdad who was there talking to them.. so it was a mess from the start.

so, since i have time.. i can plan this out a little better.

    Vibrant ultra quiet resonator?
possible high flow cats in the Y?
im even thinking of going back down to 2.5", still adding the resonator after the Y.

I need to have this done by this weekend. as of now.. its far too loud.. i cant even drive it because my hours i work.. i will most likely get noise complaints and a fix it ticket.

They're full of shit man! they just didn't want to do it.
Im sure my 18" res. is quieter than the Aero by itself, but it for sure made a huge difference. for him to say it wont do anything is s
    just stupid.
I would leave the 3" piping but just put in a resonator.
If u do high flow cats, do it first before the res. and see how it sounds. it may quiet it down enough.

I mean i somewhat see their point, as how they ran the 3" piping would make it difficult to add it in. they need to redo the collector and add a flange, then add a new section of 3".. add the resonator, then move the aero back.

Im just taking it in saturday and will be there the entire time to make sure its right.

    this is what im thinking..

    1) add high flow cats (which ones?) to the Y, then a new collector, flange, new 3" piping, 18" vibrant ultra quiet, and then the 3030xl

    2) same as above.. but ditch the 3" piping. and go back to 2.5" after the collector (so its 2.5" throughout), flange, 18" vibrant, and back to the 2525xl.

or i could throw in the factory cats in the Y.. there are just so many factors and options... AAAAGHHH!! :goingcrazy: :pout:

Yikes, now I know what you mean. That's effing loud...

If you don't alrady have a great big exhaust tip welded on the end of your pipe, you could try a really cheap experiment yourself. :)

At the auto parts stores they typically have a rack with all sizes of exhaust couplings and adaptors. They're usually under $5 each. See if you can find one that reduces down in size from the exhaust pipe you're running. Slip it over the end and start it up just to see how it sounds.

interesting. may try that. thanks

    quoted from my build:

this is what im thinking of doing. starting with the removal of the 3" piping, going down to match the rest. adding a Vibrant Ultra Quiet, then my 2525xl. if it needs more.. ill add either 2 high flow cats, or just factory ones, maybe even mine.

I just tried the same experiment by inserting a 5" length of scrap copper plumbing pipe inside my own truck's exhaust pipe like a sleeve, leaving about an inch outside so I have something to grab onto when I pull it out. The outside diameter just happened to match up to the inside diameter of my pipe. I coated it with high temp silicone to hold it in and keep it from vibrating loose, but yet the bond can still be broken and it can still be pulled out with some effort.

Man, you will NOT believe how much quieter it made the exhaust!

I'll make a new sound video and put them side by side so that you can see the contrast.

Please don't spend all that money until you try this first. Try to get a slip fit 3 inch to 2.5 inch adapter. It will cost you next to nothing, and if it doesn't work out you can always carry on with your other more expensive plans. :)

I made a video, on youtube, of me doing a very "scientific" test with a Vibrant 3" resonator. Prior to install. It did provide enough proof of how well it quiets down loud noises. That alone combined with the XL makes for a beautiful exhaust note. Of course, I also have a turbo in that mix.....

Thanks for the advice guys. Ill try that for sure this week.

So just a length of pipe to add at the exit.. 3" to 2.5" or whatever diameter.

When I go in Saturday. I'm going to have them just clamp in the resonator and the same with new 2.5" so I can hear what it does before making decisions. Ill basically be there all day with them trying every possible setup.

I came across this thread and I guess the OP is done with it. Anyway, there are some great suggestions in here from what I've read. I've also got the 2525xl but the sucker drones like crazy on the highway between 2300-2500rpm, for me, (manual trans) is normal rpm range doing 70+.
I've heard this exhaust on other Tacomas and they all seem to be different. I don't know if it's a manual/auto thing that makes it different or what. I'm liking El tacos suggestion of adding an 18 in resonator before the exhaust. Love the current sound and if it goes even deeper then that will sound in my mind even better.

I totally agree. ETaco's is one of the very best sounding exhausts I've ever heard. He hit upon a really good combination. :)

I forgot to mention, yesterday I stopped by autozone to check out their piping selection. Nothin :( nothing for 3" to 2.25" or 2.5". All smaller diameters.

Yeah, I'm not too surprised. 3 inch isn't that common. An online performance parts seller like Summit would more likely have them, but that's more involved because you'd have to wait around for it. The added resonator is a really good approach.

I think that exhaust design is one of the most fascinating aspects of a vehicle, and I changed mine around lots of times trying all sorts of combinations just to see what works best. Your experience is providing useful information for others here. :)

I guess thats one way to look at it. lol

I'm thinking this is what I'll end up doing..

high flow cats in the Y
    ditch the 3" piping
    add flanges
    do 2.25" piping
    18" Vibrant ultra quiet resonator
    put my 2525xl back on

Im wanting to tame the sound and rasp a bit more, as well as get some of my low end back. I think this will be the best setup to get a good mix.

    unless others think differently... lol
