Many, Many, Many, years ago, faced with the same delimma, I finally erred on the side of a small utility trailer and have never been without one since.

TrailersPlus keeps coming up on my radar. They do seem to stock small enclosed ones from time to time, but not right now of course, because that would be too convenient :/

But thanks all for your thoughts! Further efforts will be focused on obtaining a small enclosed trailer.

Note on TrailersPlus trailer, if you decide to keep it, you will benefit from taking it apart and sealing the overlaps of the panels. They do not seal any joints/overlaps and water can get in which can damage the interior walls and flooring.

I’d head to a dealer and check some out. There’s definitely a difference in build quality between manufacturers. It’ll also give you a better feel for the sizes.

My sis and I bought a 7x14 enclosed Cargo Mate for hauling ATVs and Dirtbikes. It's an awesome trailer, treated us well. But i've only pulled it 3 times... it's nowhere near as comfortable towing that as it is my full sized open deck car hauler. I much prefer when she tows it with her Ford Raptor. The enclosed trailer with the high roof is just SOOOO much drag. Empty cargo trailer (1600lbs) is worse than my car trailer loaded with my side x side and ATV (4000+).

It's nothing that extensive. It's just a little more than can fit in a DCSB with cap. It should all fit in a 4x8 or 5x8. I haven't totally ruled out packing what I can and shipping/selling/trashing the rest, but having some space in the bed would be very convenient for a long drive.

But it boggles the mind that TrailersPlus doesn't seal their trailers! It seems like it would be a basic feature of an enclosed trailer.

I just looked at trailers plus and they sell Interstate. Like I mentioned, Interstate is the Harbor Freight of the trailers. What size are you thinking of getting? You mentioned "small". Anything smaller than 5X8 isn't even worth getting. Personally, I wouldn't get anything smaller than 6X12. Towing a 6X12 is not that much different than towing a 5X8.

I'd suggest 6x12 V nose. The V nose will give a little more space and a good reduction in drag compared to a flat front.

They can use some improvement. I did a cargo conversion, so I found all the shortings and half assed work that most wouldn't find. But, the thing about cargo trailers is that they are fairly easy to sell and you will most likely lose less money than you would by renting.

If you're a Sams Club member I really like the one I bought from them. Price is $1299. They are 10'X6' with a ramp on the back. The sides, and front fold down, or could be taken off to make a flat bed. I've had it about 2 years. I use it for a ton of stuff including helping move my son last week.

A photo of it behind my F150. I load 2 ATV's on it. One goes on sideways on the front with the side folded down and the other I can back on from the rear.

Yeah the drag kinda sucks, you definitely notice it as you go faster.

My truck will definitely pull it faster than I feel comfortable lol the taco can get pushed quite a bit by the wind, the tundra doesn’t really care. Although sometimes between the habitat and the trailer, a crosswind can get kinda ugly

While I don't disagree with this statement, I believe there's a lot to be said regarding how an owner uses and maintains their property (trailers, vehicles, general possessions) and how that sort of "levels the playing field." I purchased an Interstate trailer knowing it was at the lower end of the spectrum, but the price and availability were perfectly matched to meet my requirements.

Prior to completing the purchase, I inspected all the pinch welds, weather sealing, frame, bearings, electrical connections, hinges, latches, and any other mechanism that moves or performs a function. I've since coated the frame with POR-15 rust blocker, put multiple coats of polyurethane on the interior wood paneling, laminate peel-n-stick tiles on the floor (for easy clean-up), and dry graphite on the hinges. I haven't had to redo the silicon seals because I'm still satisfied with the factory craftsmanship. I purchased a 5x8 cover from AMZN to mitigate moisture direct impingement and block UV rays to extend the seals and slow color fading, and also purchased 2 wheel covers to prevent dry rot. Finally, I DIY'd four jack stands from the steel footings for industrial scaffolding and take the weight off the tires if I know I'm going to be storing it for 14 days or longer.

All this to say... [yes] what you buy is certainly important but how you maintain it is arguably of greater significance down the road. These principles, when applied to my Taco, are precisely the reason I'm hoping to take her to 350k-400k miles + plenty of adventures along the way.

I've made some progress - over the weekend I got kind of lucky and found a hard tonneau and a silver Leer 100XQ both in really good condition, all receipts, paperwork, etc. DCSB stuff seems so hard to find I figured I should buy both and figure out the rest later.

I was just in the process of posting a trade for a small cargo trailer when I discovered I have to wait 30 days after creating an account to do that - doh! That puts me within a week of my move. So to anyone reading this thread, if you know anyone interested in such a trade definitely feel free to pass them along and I'll have detailed photos of everything. I am in the San Jose area.
