Sorry for this forum’s 937472 thread on air intakes, but I have sort of a specific question

I have a 2021 KDMAX tuned AT OR, and was looking to squeeze a tiny bit more low end oomph and mpg with an air intake

I’ve heard some warnings about oil-based ones, and just warnings in general that more air flow = more particles

I was considering the fanciest and most expensive one, the K&N Blackbird initially, until I read some reviews and heard it in some YouTube videos. Apparently it really cranks the engine noise past 3k rpm. While a lot of people like this much louder sound, I’ve never been into that. I’ve always been of the opinion that if you have the loudest vehicle around, you better also have the fastest vehicle around. And let’s face it, even with the KDMAX the Tacoma will never be that. Even as a teen I was never into loud vehicles

And when I read reviews of the Blackbird, there were a decent number of negative reviews just due to the noise. When I checked other models of intakes, it seems like a noise increase is pretty standard

Does anyone have any recommendations on a relatively quiet air intake, and if it is oil-based, is that still ok? (I’m pretty good at maintaining things such as cleaning and re-oiling). Or would I have to just look at a higher air flow filter and not an intake if I was concerned about big noise increases?

    ty for any help

If you want a tiny bit of oomph and some improved MPG, then stick to OE. The majority of cold air intakes, especially the ones "designed" for these trucks either end up being HAI's (Hot Air Intakes) or do the same thing as the stock one. Regardless, it's a waste of money and a pointless venture unless you supercharge, then airflow on the intake side needs some revising.
