i've had my 05 Tacoma since 2008 and since the day i bought it it has had the oem Receiver for the trailer hitch. Occasionally over the last few years the hitch has gotten stuck in it from the rust buildup in the receiver which has required me to hook it to a tree and pull it out. well today the tree won and the receiver gave out.
what i'm mainly wondering is if there is really any other option at this point for a class IV hitch besides the OEM one (PN: 5190804010). ive seen some older threads that touched upon this but nothing recently.
pictures of the carnage have been attached including close ups of the mounting points showing how eaten away the hitch was. it's really disappointing that toyota didnt replace the OEM trailer hitches with the frame recall since they were just as effected.

Yet another reason I’m glad I’m in Texas. I’d say any hitch you’re gonna have an issue with up north. Maybe don’t leave it in the receiver when not using it and use fluid inside of of it. Ugh , damn those road salts and snow melting chemicals.

yeah this truck has lived it's whole life in NJ and PA so the frame was getting pretty bad when Toyota replaced it and now this thing gave out. i normally take the hitch out but i left it in a month ago. at least it ripped off this way and not while towing.

I would say the rust won, not the tree.

That is a bummer Dude. Sorry to see that.

Very true while towing that would have not been fun at all.

Yup that's a PA truck alright, it is amazing what the salt does to vehicles. Are you dead set on class 4? The curt class 3 on Amazon is $100, I have been happy with mine.

I have an 18' utility trailer that i use my Tacoma to tow and have had it up over 5k almost every time ive loaded it up. Id rather stick with the larger towing capacity because of it.

It’d be a lot more expensive but you could always look into after market bumpers that have an integrated towing hitch or maybe just got to a local salvage yard

Since it's torn off and really rusty itself i plan on putting a different bumper on at this point anyway but i dont know of any that id trust towing a 6000lb load.

Try posting in one of the northeast threads. I'm sure someone that has an aftermarket bumper may have a hit and possibly even a bumper.

Good idea, also i just realized this would have been better suited in the towing thread. ‍‍

I have the front recovery hitch from Mobtown Offroad and it is beefy! I’m sure their rear bumper would be more than capable to tow 6500lbs. https://mobtownoffroad.com/product/2005-2015-toyota-tacoma-rear-plate-bumper/

I like this design and i saw one just like it on Ebay but im pretty sure it was made out of Chinesium so i wouldn't trust it. Unfortunately as much as i like the one you shared i can't wait 16 weeks for it to be made

Damn man, you just gotta spray some wd40 in there before putting it on and if its stuck give it a good few smacks with a hammer. Idk how hard you were tugging but that cant be kind to the frame. Regardless you dodged a bullet, would be an absolute mess if that happened while towing.

No hitch will be as strong as genuine Toyota. All the others are probably made of twice recycled rebar. Also the other aftermarket options do not utilize all the mounting points that the OE one does.

If it isn’t a certified tow hitch I’m not towing with it, almost all the aftermarket bumpers if not all that have integrated receivers carry no certification You can say it’s capable of towing something but without the certification it means nothing. I bet if you ask them if the hitch rips out of their bumper are they liable, they would say it’s capable not certified, so it’s on you. Which sucks cause a lot of those bumpers are really nice.

I have a draw tite receiver I got off eBay for like 120$. Has 5 mounting bolts on each side. Pretty solid. I’d trust it to pull anything
