So my radio only turns on when lights are on. I matched all colors except i saw on youtube yo have blue antenna wire be with red ignition switch. Heard same for orange illumination.

Is this the problem? I want radio to dim when lights get turned on or is that the dimmer cable for?

A friend of mine had a bizarre problem with an aftermarket McIntosh head unit in his '82 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit back in the early 2000s, except the issue was that the when the radio was switched on, the engine would shut off...

Turned out it was a shunt in the radio connection.

I'm guessing a wire got crossed somewhere, or perhaps you plugged something in to the wrong spot...

After the radio installation, my friend's Rolls-Royce would also shut off when the brakes were applied. The problem was caused by the McIntosh installer doing something wrong. Rolls-Royces, however, have complex electrical systems. Tacomas really don't! :)

Just out of curiosity, how did you splice your wires?

It came with 2 harness and just match up the colors. I was left with blue and orange. Based on some threads and youtube they said to plug to red wire which i did.

Cut that orange and blue away from the red. The red is switched power I’m actually very surprised you didnt blow a fuse or cause a fire. The orange is illumination. If your radio harness don’t have an orange wire on the actual harness than you can’t make the radio dim with headlights. Judging by your picture that looks an awful lot like a pioneer harness. If it’s not at least a deh-4200bt it won’t have illumination wire. I think you have blown the switched wire fuse which is why it only comes on with the headlights. It’s reading power from the headlight switch. Take a look in the fuse panel towards your left knee. There should be a 10 or 15 amp fuse that controls that.

Also you were left with blue but that’s factory amp turn on, which is useless in the 1761 harness that is in Tacomas. As well as the orange black that is probably in there.

Correct its a pioneer. I had seen on youtube to have blue go with red, but ill remove since i dont have a stereo system. It says its for antenna, but car already has antenna cable.

No orange/black. Just orange on adapter harness. Shoot so i cant even do the headlight plug? I'll see if car radio harness has an orange wire.

You have the schematic for your truck ?

You have the schematic for the new radio??

You got the adapter that plugs into the truck radio harness ??

You wired the adapter to the harness that came with the radio?

Some where you have the wire from the light circuit connected to switched power so the radio powers up when the light switch is closed

@ProjectEric2.0 that’s correct if there’s no orange on the radio side you can’t make it dim with headlights. I have been at a stereo shop for the past 6 years. I have seen a lot of stuff like this cause weird issues.

If you have no power antenna or amp the blue is not connected to any thing. It will be powered with the radio on so protect it with a bit of tape.

How do you desolder a car stereo. Same process as normal desolder with wick or just cutting wire will do the trick? Oh youtube...very well ill do without dim, but ill double check factory radio harness to see if an orange wire is there.
