My low pressure light has been on for over a year. I've just learned to ignore it. As far as the sensors are concerned, my dealer told me that as long as they are installed on the rim they are not required to do anything by law, even if they are not working. TPMS is just another big government intrusion into our lives.

Wait a minute, "by law"? Is there a law requiring TPMS be installed if originally equipped?

Yes, our over-protective United States Congress passed the TREAD Act. The Act mandated the use of a suitable TPMS technology in all light motor vehicles (under 10,000 pounds), to help alert drivers of under-inflation events. This act affects all light motor vehicles sold after September 1, 2007. Phase-in started in October 2005 at 20%, and reached 100% for models produced after September 2007. In the United States, as of 2008 and the European Union, as of November 1, 2012, all new passenger car models (M1) released must be equipped with a TPMS. From November 1, 2014, all new passenger cars sold in the European Union must be equipped with a TPMS.

Owners manuals for 2006 Tacoma can be found on ebay - found over 3 dozen from $12 including free shipping. Electronic (.pdf) 2006 Tacoma owners manuals are available (download - no cost) from the Toyota Owners website. IMHO a must have resource, especially for a young driver.

Also attached find Toyota brochures, especially info on the 4x4

Fullboogie: Nobody is freaking. . To remove and replace a tire around here is maybe 20 bucks. On top of $185? No thanks. We dont care of they work or not. Like I said. Many of us have safely lived most of our lives without TPS. It would be nice to get rid of the blinking light, but we can live with that as well.

You certainly sounded panicked. So who is "we"?

You're welcome for the links by the way.

With the TPMS sensors in the 05-15 trucks there is a button at the bottom of the dash below the steering column. Make sure the tires are all at least at 29 psi or this won't work. I set mine to 32 psi for this. Your son shouldn't need new sensors unless there is moisture inside the tire somehow that caused corrosion or something.

1.Turn off the truck if it isn't off already.
2.Check all 5 tires for the correct pressure.
3.Once they're all at or above 29 PSI hold the button at the bottom of the dash down. The light on the dash should blink a few times.

After that it should go away and not turn back on unless the tires go under the pressure you just set. That procedure re-calibrates the TPMS and sets the current tire pressure as the new minimum.

The batteries go dead in the sensors, his truck is a 2006..

But that is the correct reset procedure. Its nice how toyota gives you the button to set your own baseline

Fullboogie: My opening statement says " Our son just bought a beautiful 06 Tacoma 4x4". I also professed ignorance about this issue since I have never owned a vehicle that new. I am curious but I am really trying to help him out. I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee so I spend MANY hours on Jeep Forums trying to keep that running.. You Yota guys have it much easier than us guys that buy older Jeeps. I joined this forum to get information for him. So the "we" is he and I, but mostly him since its his truck..He seems indifferent at this point about the blinking light. Thank you for the links..

Ccrames2018: We did try resetting it and when that didnt work I decided to look further into it. Its amazing to me to think these sensors would be reliant on batteries which is an obvious flaw. I had no idea how something like this might work, design-wise. Its an expensive system to maintain since most of us cannot dismount , mount and rebalance tires in our own garage.

My next project is to figure out what to do to correct the sagging sun visors......

    Thanks again, everybody.
