Aftermarket seats in 3rd Gen some info.

After putting seats in and running around trying to find solution to the COD (occupant sensor) I knew all along MetalTech4x4 made a defeat for the FJ and 2nd Gen, and was told by them they didnt have a working unit for the 3rd gen, as harnesses had changed. There are several harness versions on the 3rd gen, so check that first (see step 2)

After digging a bit and some back and forth with John at MT4x4 he said there are a few different connection types which would necessitate a custom harness to join their unit to the ECU.

Luckily my truck has the harness that works. So if you're thinking I want to put real seats into my Taco, heres what to look

#1. The COD Ecu must have the 89952-30511 revision.


#2. Pop the grey plug off and ensure it has 2 rows of 6 pins.


#3, Profit.



#4. Relax in your new jammies, with no dash lights.

Are these seats' height adjustable?

 

They are not. Seat adjustability themselves are: Base, bolsters, lumbar is 4 way adjustable. The planted brackets I use are really low, which is perfect for me. Planted will make the brackets custom to whatever height you want.

Isn't there air bags in the stock seats? If so no air bag light?
I'd like to put some nice seats in.

 

So yes, there are. Resistors are run in-line to make the ecu think the seats airbags are there.

planted can make the brackets any height as well. i’m thinking of making the passenger bracket taller as my wife is 5’ tall

 

Those seats look great. I'm not a fan of the stock seats, but I don't think I'd want to give up the side airbags.
I've seen too many photos of Tacoma accidents where the side airbags saved the occupants from serious injuries.

 

Does our ECU need to see some type of data signal, thus why you need that special black box? It’s not just a resistor value the truck needs to see? Haven’t looked into removing the seat, so just wondering.

i don’t personally know. i haven’t found a good answer for how the system functions. being that the system senses weight the box basically lets you fool the system into turning off and on like factory just manually.

i’m going to remove the physical switch and replace with a pressure switch under the seat that turns off and on with weight.

ok, so I bought the metaltech OCS bypass. Put it in finally this AM. Cleared hard codes and I now have fully functioning airbags as well as control over the passenger (ie turn on/off manually via switch) I plan to run a micro pressure switch that should automatically do what the factory OCS does

 

They do look comfortable and very nice, and if I didn’t have family and kids maybe, otherwise I’d just go with the OEM seats for their sake.

 

I'm so glad I found this lol. I'm currently looking at seats but couldn't find the airbag solution. Thank you for the helpful post! Also, what type of seats are those? I'm currently looking at PRP but I'm unsure about fitment, comfortably, etc.

 

They are Scheel Mann, long running high-end German Brand.

 

Is the position of these seats any lower than the lowest seated position of the stock seats? I am tall and have a hard time with the stock seats. Both in comfort and visibility out the front windshield. If these sat even an inch lower, it would make a big difference.
