Like the title says, have a stock head unit in my 12' base 4x4, wanting a little more, but don't want to change out the head unit. Will aftermarket speakers sound any better with the stocker? I know I've read a thread on this somewhere on here before, but just wondering if anyone has first hand experience they could chime in with. (just an FYI, not looking for ear bleeding bass, just a little bit more all around for rock music) thanks guys

    Yes, they will sound better.

One of my door speakers has already blown out.
I know for sure I will swap them out with an aftermarket set.

I think you'll be disappointed with the results.

I've found that just replacing speakers doesn't do a whole helluva lot since the factory headunit is tuned to work with the stock speakers. Best bet is to get a new HU as well.

    +1

New set of Polk components still sounded like crap.
The stock HU is "detuned" to avoid blowing the stock speakers.

Bleh. That's not what I wanted to hear! Haha thanks anyway though guys. Probably just wait and see if the stockers blow ( doubt they will don't listen to my music realllllly loud) and go from there

    Loud as hell URD exhaust!
I changed mine out with Fosgate speakers and had to go back to stock. I dont think the stock head unit has enough power to push better speakers. Im going to try again once I install decent amp.

This^ The stock head unit has just enough power to push really low end speakers like the stockers. If you want to keep the stock HU then just add a small 2 channel amp under your seat and then you can then push some nice aftermarket speakers and retain stock HU.

The wife got me for Xmas a Bull Bar, which would have required that I take off the skid plate on my TRD Off Road. Plus I wasn't even thinking about a chrome bull bar

No way. She never knows what to buy, and had no idea that she was over charged.

So, I returned it, and had a new set of speakers installed in the doors, the ones in the ceiling are not worth the trouble to change.

Had a new amp installed also, and this old guy is very happy with the set up!

The shop put the unit under the drivers seat, ran a direct feed directly from the battery.

    270 watts, 6 channels.
Two channels are driving the sub.
The remainder is divided among the 4 door speakers, so at best, it's 45 watts per channel (2 channels feeding 90 to the sub).

That's respectable, but OP isn't talking about the JBL system.

I agree that the sound system is not great as is. The sound is good while the truck is not running. I found that the volume needed to be turned up greater than 50% in order to get to a decent decibel level. At that point the sound starts to distort.

While investigating new speakers and stereo, I settled on an amplifier instead. I chose the Alpine 445 Power Pack. The amp along with reverse wiring harness cost me less than $150.

Sound is very subjective and all may not agree. In in my opinion, it made a dramatic difference in overall sound quality and volume capability. All frequency ranges were enhanced and the bass is also very good considering I have no sub. I no longer turn up the volume greater than 30% for fear of damage to the speakers. Long term, the stock speakers may not hold up very well and new ones may be needed But for the past 7 months, they along with the normally underpowered stock stereo work well enough for me to stop shopping.

    Hope this information helps.

Doesn't matter if you buy the best speakers the HU can power, the stock HU's output is crap. Buy a new HU and your stock speakers will sound soooo much better than buying new speakers on the stock HU.

They sound better for now, but if you push them, they're gonna blow.

I know you have 6x9s in the DC, but I'd bet money that your magnets are similar to mine.

I added a new a head unit and a 4 channel amp going to my stock speakers so far it has been a year and still holding up. And I crank them pretty loud surprised there still holding up and with the amp sound very clear still for stock speakers.

Replacing the speakers and leaving the stock head unit is like clapping with one hand. You'll get a little better but you won't open up the true spectrum without the HU.

I know you aren't going this far but I have an 800 watt setup in mine..sounds good
