My 98 Tacoma with 2.4 L four started running cold regardless of how far I drove. I changed the original thermostat for a Stant with no jiggle valve. To change the stat, I drained out 5 quarts of coolant mix. Now, I cannot get more than a quart of coolant back into the radiator.

I am starting to regret not buying a factory thermostat. Is there any way to purge the system and get all the coolant back in?

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Have you run the truck at all yet? if not start it up and let the system burp with the rad cap off. Typically it will draw more coolant through the system and allow you to add coolant until full.

I fixed the problem. I looked at the old thermostat carefully and there was a chunk of rubber wedged in the thermostat holding it open about 1/16 inch. Put the stat in boiling water, it opened and released the crud, and I reinstalled it with a new gasket. Works fine now. I have been fooling wih cars awhile and never saw that happen. I just got done replacing the old antifreeze with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and RO water. Another few things and I am ready for old man winter :)

Personally I would be concerned about how a piece of rubber made its way into a sealed system.
