This is a good definition from Wiki:

The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction), while blocking it in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). As such, the diode can be viewed as an electronic version of a check valve. This unidirectional behavior is called rectification, and is used to convert alternating current (ac) to direct current (dc).

Automobile alternators have diodes to block part of the waveform, so produces DC power like a generator.

Check out this thread. You can get a diode from Ford for about $13.xx I did it to mine a little while ago and it seems to help. Goes from 14.2v to 14.7v output. I have the X2 battery and had it for about 2 years before adding this diode and never had an issue. But having the peace of mind is nice. Plus added voltage output will increase the output of your headlights assuming you have halogen lamps.

Have had a rebranded Exide Edge in my truck for 4+ years. No charging system mods, it's going strong. I do have a Noco Genius g3500 charger that I run on it once a month or so but I treat my lead acid batteries the same.

great, add this to the list of stuff to do. Looks like the previous owner of my truck put in an AGM battery, but no voltage boost.
