Feeling a bit lazy on 40-85mph pulls on the way home. Trans Really doesnt wanna give up 5th gear until I push into 4D (or floor it). Are these transmissions usually reluctant to downshift? Never owned a auto taco before. Also, on my more 'spirited' commutes I'm greeted with a delightful and familiar 'hot truck' smell upon exiting the vehicle Am I ruining my new ride? Typical of this trans? Don't go from 40-80 to get through congestion? Driving had a lot less difficult choices when my 22re topped out at 64 before running out of straightaway.

Well yes it is programmed that way for mpg reasons. And I have to add that it isn't a sports car.

    It's a rocketship compared to a 22re. Maybe I'll cool it down.

You could check your trans temp with an app like scan gauge or ultra gauge or torque.

I haven’t seen mine get above 170° or so (yet) but I haven’t been monitoring it long. And I don’t drive aggressively as you do.

at times, i can smell what seems like a slight burning rubber smell exiting my truck. Not always, but does happen on occasion and havent been able to track it down. All my fluids are good. I havent checked if the exhaust is too close to something rubber.

As far as the trans, lately i kick into 4 on long hills, just because i dont want to stuff it to get it to shift

I feel your pain, came from a 91 T4R 22RE 5 Speed 4x4 on 32's. the 4.0 is plenty of power for me.

Do you manually shift the trans?

If not do it. Only after you disconnect the battery for roughly 10+ minutes.

Reconnect. Then drive it hard, while manually shifting it.

That will teach the transmission new shifting patterns.

For passing, say 55 to 80..., I alway downshiftt manually to 4th or even 3rd--I do this with my SL500 too, which of course takes off like a rocket ship compared to the Taco...

On Scangauge it’s a code you have to program, 2 codes actually, it gives 2 temps. Torque converter and at the pan is my guess of the 2.

I use the ultra gauge. There are several custom gauges, one of which shows a trans temp.
