2nd gen steering wheel comes out with nominal arm force, no puller needed. Slide hammers should be reserved for Mercedes Benz diesel injectors (look up videos on Youtube  )

Anyway, spiral cable problems should result in codes stored even if the condition is intermittent.

I'm going to have to pull the code the moment the airbag light triggers then because there is literally nothing stored in there. The only scanner I didn't attempt to use was the Autel one I have which is the most feature rich one we have available.

The 2nd gen steering wheel does not require a puller? You are meaning to tell me that I am able to perform the spiral cable swap at home without having to borrow one of those annoying puller tools from my work?

I never use a puller on Toyotas.

Remove the nut, bang the fat parts of the wheel with palm.

    Boom.

The warning light has always worked as it normally does. If there is a passenger on it, it indicates the airbag is on and if there is obscure weight being put on it it reads off. If the passenger is sitting in it without a seatbelt it indicates the icon as off, if they aren't wearing it, it will show the icon illuminated. It is not manually diaengagable like earlier gen 2nd gen.

Better yet, DON'T remove the nut all the way. Leave it on a few threads. Then when you pull on the wheel and it comes loose, the nut will still stop it from hitting you in the face.

You hit towards the steering wheel, you don't pull it off.

It loosens, and a child can pull it off. I should take a video one day.

The code should be stored even if the fault condition has gone away. Don't over-think it. Check those conditions listed in the service manual pages I attached if you haven't already.

In case you do want to check the spiral cable anyway, 2nd gen steering wheel comes off with some wobbling, similar to this Prius (go to 09:10):

If you have already had horn issues with the cable, then i would put a very good bet on that that is your issue. If its already giving you problems why wait anyways to see if it fails when you might actually want your airbag to deploy.

Just to give an update to this I believe my airbag light was a very false code. I noticed the issue only occurs after making flash changes to my PCM via HPTuners and will go away and will stay off after having done the flash. I think as previously mentioned the SRS module is seeing lack of voltage during the flash and it doesn't like it which explains why the light trips on after starting the vehicle initially and driving it, then turns off and stays off anytime after the fact.

Thanks for the insight guys!

I actually read an article about that recall...
Spiral cable replacement on some trucks due to affecting airbag. It should be around here.
