Maybe Toyotas are different, but on Hondas the SRS control unit needs to be replaced after air bag deployment.
I would spend the one hour diagnostic fee to have the dealer inspect the system.

Neumann86 did your steering wheel still have all the functions working? Horn, cruise, volume and station buttons? It has to be either the clock spring or the SRS ECU. Does the dealership have a more comprehensive scanner that would show codes not found on a Snap On scanner?

I took out the center console and removed the ECU to take it in for programming. My ECU was re flashed already. They said it was re programmed and I have no way of checking if they did it correctly. I assume a shop that only does crash sensor re calibration would have done it right the first time.

yes and at the low prices, you could just buy two and have a spare for 1/5 the price of the oem part. if you don't mind the reliability issue.

yes, give it the ol' "I'll makes it fit"

so, what could cause the dummy light to light up, but no code? these things can be quite difficult to figure out via text

From what I understand there was an airbag deployment at some point before the OP bought the truck, he sent the module out to be reset but that doesn't always work.

It's typically reccomended to replace a SRS module whenever there is an airbag deployment as they are designed to lock themselves when there is a deployment, there are places that claim to be able to reset them but I'm not sure I would trust it.

Do 2nd gens have a pressure sensor in the passenger seat?

In the 3rd gen the light comes on when there's a passenger or too many groceries on the seat.

I'd prefer to just spend the extra and get an OEM clock spring if thats the case. I've heard some stories about the Chinese ones shitting the bed after a few months.

The pressure sensor in the passenger seat was re set even though it wasn't showing a code.

Called the shop that did the ECU and they can scan it. Said there might be codes that a Snap On can't read, but I'm not too optimistic. I thought a good OBD scanner would be able to identify any code present. If the ECU reads clear, I believe it pretty much narrowed it down to the clock spring, or a voltage issue.

Is there any way a clock spring will throw a code, or does it just die slowly if a wire is frayed?

There would be codes if there was an issue in any of the sensor or squib circuits, being there is no codes but the light is on all it can be is low voltage at the module or a bad module.

I'll take a square on the problem pool chart for $1 being 'bad module'.

I'm sure you'll get it resolved, keep us updated.

If I'm right, you can keep the $1 toward your repair. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly send you $1 to help with your cost. :D

Good to know if its the clock spring it will show some kind of code, so thats ruled out.

I was looking at a replacement module online and they are not cheap, so hoping it's a voltage issue. I'll let you guys know when it's fixed and what the issue was.

I don’t know much about the SRS system, but is it like the ECU where the VIN is in there? If so, I wonder if any inconsistencies in the “reset” of the SRS module are causing this.

The VIN is not stored in the SRS on a 2nd gen, to my knowledge the only module on a 2nd gen that stores the VIN is the PCM.

There isn't even any setup or configuration for the SRS other than zeroing the weight sensor in the passenger seat.

It just says for vehicle involved in collision with airbag deployment replace SRS module.

I do remember a guy at the shop that did the re set mentioning something about the vin being entered back in through the software. Said it could have possibly been entered incorrectly when I called a month ago after it was done and the truck still showed the light.

I really hope I don't have to replace the module. The price online looks to be $600-$800. I'll ask them again about the vin actually being in the module when I drive back down to have them scan.

Update: just left the shop that re flashed the module. It is the ECU. After plugging it into a more comprehensive ABS scanner. Said it could be a re flash error, or a burned out chip inside the module. The truck has 55,000 on the odo, and no water or moisture damage so I'm leaning to an error on their end being the culprit.

If it is a burned chip, I'm looking at another module. At least I can take the $209 I was going to pay the dealership to diagnose and put it tword another module if it goes that route.

    Thanks for the help guys!
