Bad sensor, bad connection to the impact system, random computer malfunction. Prolly safest to take it to a dealer and get it figured out.

the airbag should be in failsafe and should not fire while that light is on, even in an accident.

What does it say in the owners manual?

I'm pretty sure it says to take it to a dealership asap, but I don't have the book with me at the moment.

Air bags are not something you can just reset, the light only comes on if there is a problem with the system and it has to be diagnosed and serviced at a shop/dealer.
