I was sitting in my truck on my lunch break with the air conditioning on (it was hot as hell) My truck was idling and I noticed the engine was making a weird "revving" sound and then clicking off. It would rev and then rev off. I think it was because of the air conditioning.

    Anyone else notice this?

    Thanks

Normal characteristic (not just of Tacomas but a lot of other new vehicles). It revs so low (conserving fuel and emissions) at idle that it needs to rev up intermittently to power the A/C compressor. It can be annoying but it is normal and expected behavior.

Normal AC compressor activity. My 04 does it.

when the magnetic clutch on the compressor grabs, the engine has to rev up to account for the extra load.

It's a big complaint I have with it. I have a job where I'm frequently in my truck and parked. Need the a/c on in FL heat, kicks on and off constantly.

Very annoying but as others (abd Toyota) said its normal. My old '06 G35 never did it.

My Frontier has an electric fan for the AC condenser. It kicks on occasionally when it's hot out and the truck isn't moving. Not sure if Toyota added one to the 3rd gen (my 2nd gen didn't have one).

Mine does it too. It's really annoying when you're trying to take a nap during lunch and you can feel the increase in revs and hear the noise.

I've had cars increase revs when the AC kicked on but nothing like this stop start stop start jerky revving the Tacoma does.

Could be worse :) my 63 nova had "Air Conditioning" and when you turned it on at idle the engine would shut off...
