I have a 2013 TX TRD 4wd, and recently I was sitting at a drive thru window at a pharmacy on 106 degree day, when all of a sudden a terrible smell overwhelmed the cab and the cold air quit blowing, I pulled over checked everything out, could find nothing wrong, left the air off for a few minutes and when I turned it back on the air came out cold as ice again, it seems to have been working fine since then...fast forward to sometime mid week last week when I have begin to notice a rattling sound at idle and it's been getting increasingly louder, now coupled with a sound I could only describe as sort of a hiss/screech (intermittent, noticeable mostly at low speeds and idle) type...truck seems to be running just fine, AC is still working just fine, just wondering if anyone with a 2nd gen had experienced anything like this with theirs, Thank you

Possible bearing on one of the pulleys.

My '15 Tacoma 4.0L with just 25K on the clock recently received new belt - belt tensioner & the 2 idler pulleys closest to alt/ac compressor. Warranty work. My situation was different than yours, but there was "noise" that wasn't there before.
I see a lot of these types of posts here.
If it's happening to a 2+ yr. old truck with 25K, who knows how many other older trucks are experiencing this sort of thing.

It's your clutch on the compressor. There's a rubber coupling that's worn but not broken leaving the AC to still work. Check where the pulley is and see if there's any black rubber particles. This just happened to my son's 2005 Prerunner. $.02 Good luck

The terrible smell.......if the smell was burnt rubber it sounds like it would be the serpentine belt, but you'll have to figure out the cause. Could been dragged over a bad pulley, or even smaller chance, the tensioner gave out momentarily and the crankshaft pulley was burning up the belt, or the rubber in the AC clutch burned a little or the compressor froze and burned the belt. As was suggested already, I would give your belt a good inspection, if it looks good I would seriously start looking at the AC compressor clutch.

I had to change out the tensioner on mine at 45000mi on mine, it was rattling for a while and was getting worse. And no, it wasn't the bearing, I pulled everything off the front of the engine and checked all the bearings and pulleys to make sure. Changing out the tensioner is a pain in the ass, especially with shock tower gussets. And prior to that I had a serpentine belt give out at 40k and took out the main crankshaft shaft oil seal.

That sounds terrible, but that sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing, because there is also a mysterious rattle, almost like a "knocking" but I figured something is also overloading a circuit somewhere thus the blown fuse...thank you guys
