How often (mileage) are you guys changing your air filter? Is it much of a job or did Toyota make it simple and quick?

100% agreed. Paper filters are my preference as well.

I guess it just depends on the area you live in, I’m on the highway a lot but also at the ranch weekly and it’s super dusty... I’ve replaced mine once in 3 years/90k+ miles. The dealer will check it at every service and usually try to sell you a new one every 20k, I suspect it’s just SOP for them.

Am I correct to understand that the owner's manual states to change the air filter every 30k miles? Does this seem right???? Thanks!

Regular service (which is pretty much just standard on-road mileage) is every 30K. If you take it off-road frequently (severe service), I'd cut that 30K in half.

I do mine every 20K (every other oil change)--most of my mileage is highway but I do take mine off-road once or twice a month on average.

The best way to be sure is to just inspect it--takes all of 2 minutes to pop the hood and airbox lid and take a gander. If it's really dirty, replace.

I change mine once a year or about 15-20k miles whether it needs it or not as cheap insurance. You never know when a defect in the seam or a tiny rupture in the element might not show up under normal eye inspection.

Very easy simple job, just make sure is sealed all the way around the cover/casing before clamping it down.
Pro tip: No one will take that simple job more serious than the actual owner.

    Cheers!
