Has anyone cut this out of the intake and just left the drop in filter? It looks restrictive so just curious.

If you want to experiment, either get another unit from a wreck or wait till your warranty is up. Just so no one can void you if you have an internal engine issue. Because you tampered with it.

Keep in mind that in the world of computer controls, you manually adding more air will be compensated by the computer to keep things the way it wants them kept.

I think my TRD intake (bought from Toyota) doesn't have that screen in there.

I’ve heard of and seen pre filter screens but this appears to be a post-filter mesh!

This is essentially correct. The engine breathes just fine without modification. The MAF is pretty sensitive to particulate contamination and the engine will run like dog squeeze when it gets dirty. Removing air filtration upstream of the MAF is just not a particularly good idea. It is your truck though so do what you like.

Experimentation would be interesting but there is a thread on here I read recently that I just recalled now that states the truck makes 0 additional horsepower(dyno confirmed) with NO filter at all so removing that screen would be of no performance advantage whatsoever! It basically attests to the engineering behind the stock OEM intake and there are no gains to be had unless (possibly) there was ECU tuning involved to utilize the less restrictive intake tract.

OR you had a less restrictive exhaust then you could utilize a less restrictive intake! I think that's how it works??

It does. I removed mine from the TRD intake. If any “issues” come up, I’ll put the stock intake back in.

I believe it’s just to keep gases from escaping when the truck it off.

It does nothing for filtration as that's what the main filter's job is. As pointed out it just scrubs any gas fumes on shut down that may come back from the engine and is suppose to prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere.

    But Dyno yeah.

I said it felt snappier, but I removed that, replaced the oiled TRD filter with a AFE dry pro, and cleaned my MAF sensor at the same time.
