From what info I could gather on Toyota's genuine parts site, the engine air filter and cabin air filter are the same P/Ns on the 2016's as the gen 2 models. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I'm gonna go against the crowd on this one. I'm thinking if you clean the K&N often and don't live in a dirty/dusty climate the K&N will serve its purpose as a reusable filter. Now if you live in a "dirty" area, I wouldn't advise running the K&N for fear of clogging the air filter with debris. To say the K&N is going to destroy your engine is absurd. Plenty of family members/friends have ran them for over 100k without any issues. I think many members on here advise against the filter simply because it is oiled. If you over oil the filter, it is most definitely gonna have an effect on your MAF sensor. You just have to recognize its limits and intended use.

Going to run stock filter for now, but will switch to an AEM or aFe dry filter down the road. Had a Volant CAI on my Fronty and used a dry filter for that system, but ultimately switched back to stock air box with an AEM dry filter.

My '06 K&N air filter(engine) was different than the '16, so I left it in the '06.... The '16 is a lot different..

That a first I heard anything bad about K&N. The 2.7 4 cylinder is the same. I just bought the filter and put it in my 3rd gen. I have k&n intake system in my crz and I think it awesome, have about 80k miles on it.

Paper filter replaced every 15K for me due to dusty road conditions on my ranch property. I use an oem filter.

oh, man! After reading from k&n vs oem, I believe I got suckered by "the world's best air filter" slogan. It back to oem and k&n back to autozone.

How would a cabin air filter give you power?

A K&N OEM filter isn't going to get much dirtier than a stock one. Maybe hold a little more dirt because of the oil on the filter. I had a K&N short ram on my old Celica and even that never got bad. It's nice to be able to wash it out and reoil. Now I have seen some cold air intake filters get pretty dirty and clogged but they are usually sitting in a wheel well and very close to the road. One inside a factory air box will be more than fine

K&N filters don't get dirty because they let dirt through.

    This is 100% true.
Everything is always a tradeoff. Here the tradeoff is airlfow vs. filtration. More airflow -> less filtration and vice versa.

The K&N filter mesh is too coarse to filter small dirt particles on its own so they added this spray-on sticky oil to aid in capturing particles and achieve sufficient filtering. But when most the sticky oil is saturated with dirt (which happens rather quickly) the particles start going through the filter into your engine.

K&N marketing materials brag about the fact that "airflow increases as filter gets dirty" which is puting a positive spin to the explanation above. This is genious marketing and I am constantly impressed at how K&N has managed to turn this very premise into a predominant filter empire.

Glad I don't have it in my head that I need a K&N air filter. Used Fram filters for 38 years with no problems.
