Hello. I have an aftermarket exhaust tip on my 2021 Tacoma and just noticed that the weld connecting the tip doesn’t cover the bottom third or so. You can see where the light comes through in the pic.

is that normal? Any good reasons for doing it this way? (Yes I’m super new to the insides and undersides of cars and trucks).

    Thank you

It doesn't matter. It's a cosmetic piece. Are you sure it's welded and not clamped?

it looks like clamped and I think that is the common method for decretive tailpipe tips.

I’ve got a trd exhaust for sale that would get rid of that unsightly gap. Hehehe

Thanks! It’s definitely welded though you can’t see it from that pic.

Water will sometimes be produced and exit the exhaust system. The TRD tips have a tiny drain hole. This looks like a possible drain as well. Just a guess though.

You mention it's aftermarket. Assuming you know this because you bought and installed it, did you not read the packaging?

That is the 'extractor' model that increases horsepower through the vortex created by the flow of ambient air through that gap meeting with the superheated exhaust stream, which has a similar effect as using larger diameter piping by hastening the waste gases exit and reducing backprssure.

You should also realize a slight rise in MPG and longer life of exhaust components over a closed system.

Since this is all accomplished at a budget friendly price and discreetly in the eyes of the public and vehicle inspectors, you have a great value there!

    :hattip:

Just messin with ya. But it spun up pretty well didn't it? :D

Are you sure it is not an exhaust scoop? If the gap allows high speed air to enter the in a precise way, it helps to scavenge the exhaust.
What you are looking at is not a flaw but a feature.

That's not good. The exhaust gasses might escape.

Definitely a poor weld job where did you it get from? Who welded it? That would fall off within a year in New England
