air intake duct - do I really need these two canisters?

ok first off im keeping the stock airbox, that's not something im going to change because it works great. I already removed and cut out the inner fender 90 so its an unrestricted cold air intake sealed system just like a deck plate mod but better because it cant get dirty so nothing more needs to be done to it and im keeping it.

    my question is:

after the air filter box and the MAF sensor, there are cans attached to the ducting that I don't understand what they are there for.

    what are these two canisters?

what do these two canisters do?

why do I need these two canisters?

I ask because im wondering if I can just replace them with a straight tube like those aftermarket open air filter setups do.

so are they restrictive in any way?

the one by the head is bigger heavy and feels like its full of something as well as having a small tiny inspection plate the size of a nickel down by the bottom corner that looks like it can be removed but I didn't mess with it.

I just think it would clean up things under the hood to get rid of excess crap if its not needed but for some 0.0000001% reduction in emissions

ok, im thinking its best to just get extra stock boots and cut out the connecting points and put boots there but I may just use pvc pipe instead.

I don't want to spend money doing it and it will have a much cleaner look under the hood after.

I mean its a 4 cylinder and its not a turbo or anything so how sucky noise can it sound that it needs silencers. if they are silencers then then have to have "some" restriction to muffle sound just like a muffler does so maybe it will help.

not sure what changes might be caused for the MAF sensor though if any

OP - can you post a pic? I am trying to visualize my intake, and I think I know what you are referring to, but not 100% certain. I am wondering what/if any difference between your '99 2.4L and my '97 2.7L in this department.

I got no pics but here is a video that shows it very well and you can see why I would like to get this large can gone if I don't need it

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyvamsDay6A&list=PLidCGcjQT-XKRS3Bx0B0UNSLZ1RSdHnri&index=85

as you can see in the video when he turns it over, the first tube has the small can that simply is clamped on under it so that looks easy to plug off but the second can has fitting in it and I think its best to figure a way to cut the can off and just slip a plumbing pipe rubber connecting boot over it to seal it off where the hole is.

im assuming the MAF sensor and ECM adjust to any change in airflow as a result of removing the cans from it.

Gotcha, that was what I was thinking you were referring to. Grab some wide tubing at AutoZone or whatever and by pass all that and see if you throw codes, yeah?
