    Just wanted to add...
A tires footprint increases way more longitudinaly than laterally when 'underinflated'.

Is that for optimum fuel efficiency?

The problem with it just as @Mrtacoman88 shows and as @splitbolt said, looks can be deceiving. That is the problem with using chalk. While people have done it for years, it doesn't mean that it works. With 10 ply tires and 2 of those plys being steel belts, your tread remains flat over a vast PSI range. On top of that, the shape that your tires have 2mph is different than they are at 70mph. You get a fair amount of distortion as they spin. This is why putting chalk on your tires is pointless. In the old days when people ran bias ply tires, they would shape like balloons when you put more air in them and you could actually lift the side walls off the ground and run only the middle of the tread with enough air. To do that with a 10 ply steel belted radial, you would need to approach the 300psi range to get that kind of distortion.

Now as for heat, you would start by measuring the temp across the face of the tire. From there you would determine the temperature you measure to what you are trying to achieve. In theory the temp should be the same all the way across and as you increase pressure, you should see a decrease in temperature. It is much more complex than that, but that is the way to do it.

How does a load range C (6 ply equivalent) fit into the math here? Asking for a friend.

    I digress.....
