I am planning on doing some wiring MOD to install key-less entry on my new 2019 SR model. Third generation.
Does anyone know what steps should be taken to insure that an accidental airbag deployment does not occur? It seems that removing the negative battery lead will stop accidental deployment BUT I will need the battery hooked up to probe various terminals in order to locate & get the proper inputs into the aftermarket key-less module. I will be working mostly beneath the steering column and related panels.....What I am most concerned about is probing some connector pin which sends a signal to deploy. Does that actually happen or are safeguards built in? Surely there are many Toyota technicians who will know about this subject.

Stay away from the yellow wire harnesses. Airbag wire harnesses are yellow. Steer clear of those and you'll be fine.

Such bs... their are many yellow wires that are something else. For instance one of the 3 yellow wires in the drivers a pillar is the power on for the dome lights... I tapped it for my dsim for my rock lights....

Just make sure you unplug the ground and follow the instructions... should be pretty easy.

Also I wouldn’t prob random pins... get the full manual or look it up and find the right pin. May have to do some searching.

Bs...? How about you hone your reading comprehension skills and re-read my post. I didn't say yellow wires. I said yellow wire harnesses. Airbag system wiring are wrapped in yellow wire loom. Stay away from yellow wire HARNESSES.

Yellow shrouded wire looms and connectors are SRS, there's a few yellow wires in a main harness but not many, and its best to be careful.

The practice to disconnect the battery is a good one, but all you have to worry about is the big yellow connector that's revealed under the steering column connector.

It's rare to deploy an airbag, you need to induce voltage to it and you are trying to take voltage.

The worst thing to do is tilt the SRS ECU while the battery is connected, this convinces it of a roll over. This is also rare, and you won't be anywhere near it.

Yellow means bad, just avoid them and you'll be fine.

Also a note, most SRS connectors have fail safe connectors that require a slide action to disconnect, just to avoid any confusion.

just a picture of a yellow SRS loom.

Well, I was hoping that I could just pull the airbag related circuit fuses or something along that line. I have heard that some vehicles have procedures to disable airbags and these tacomas being used for off road I would expect that to be switch somewhere.

I imagine a lot of guys have had airbags go off when bouncing off road. When I was younger I was a fully certified ASE mechanic and I mostly did light line which was a lot of electrical work. It has been many years since I did that type of work professionally and many things have changed but the basic reality is that sometimes you need to have power on to trace things out, however I am concerned about the airbags either being deployed from an accidental wiring mishap or perhaps pulling a panel and exposing a sensor. I have heard of many really bad stories of accidental deployment and the related costs or injuries. For instance. This One which could be total BS but I guess it is possible. A Guy was using a jimmy stick inside a vehicle door to try to unlock it and an airbag went off and pushed that rod up into him killing him. Sounds possible, but we will need mythbusters. Anyway, I am sure there is a way to do this besides total system power disconnect.

I did find a 3rd Gen thread related to the connectors and pin outs below the steering column but it is 2016 and as you know the pin outs CAN change due to new improved electronics. Here it is uploaded as a PDF I sure hope it is the same for 2019

and here is the 2019 toyota keyless install procedure for tacoma I was considering getting the toyota keyless entry box which costs about $120 on ebay However after looking at the connectors and pins for the lights and horn, which are on the steering column with very tiny wires, I decided to stay with the unit I have. I did not hook up any lights but I did connect a 12v buzzer directly to the output of the $12 ebay keyless unit.

Disconnect the battery, wait ten minutes for the capacitors to discharge. Pull the fuses for the SRS system if you are reconnecting the battery to probe.
As already noted, stay away from probing wires with yellow conectors/loom. You’ll be fine.
