Older son has a '96 X-Cab 4x4, with 3.4L & 5 speed we just got last week. Like the title says, the airbag light stays on sometimes, but not every driving cycle. Sometimes full illumination, sometimes dim. Any ideas?

I once had a similar thing going on like that. It turned out being that if i had my phone charger with phone plugged into one of the outlets (not sure which one of the three, cig or the 2 actual outlets)but it would somehow feed power back through the line it seemed and illuminate that damn light. It would even stay on if the truck was off to! Give that a quick check. I had mentioned it here quite a while back and another member had also experienced it as well.

Wasn't there a member who had it come on every time he went over a bump? I'd check the wires to it, they may be loose.

Disconnect the battery first I can not stress this enough also keep in mind it's not uncommon for a residual charge to be in the circuit possibly causing the air bags to go off. Now stick your head under the seat and check the connection at the wires they should be the yellow connectors. Disconnect the connectors and check for corrosion and check the harness for breaks at the connector. Follow the harness down and look for any areas that may have rubbed through and is grounding out on some thing IE: seat rails. Or springs

Good luck and be safe air bags are scary

Maybe it is an occupancy sensor or such for the front seat. I noticed the "Fasten Seat Belt" light doesn't always illuminate either. Is that a serviceable item?

Is there a shimmy in the front end? My front tires were terribly out of balance and my airbag light would come on if I was on the highway for a bit (shimmy started around 50mph). Re-balanced the tires, shimmy gone, no more airbag light. Just a thought, hope it helps.

My son's 2002 Honda Civic currently has the SRS light on. A diagnostic tool at O-Reilly's showed code 9-3, which is a faulty driver's seat belt buckle switch. I watched several Youtube videos on disassembling and cleaning the microswitch in the buckle, which was successful in clearing the fault in every video I saw.

Has anyone done this with a Tacoma buckle, if they can be disassembled? Some the symptoms I saw on the Honda videos are duplicated in our truck, so I though I'd give it a try.

Hmm I don't believe so, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm interested to see the answers.

I was able to fix the Civic SRS light issue by disassembling and cleaning the buckle and resetting the light. One week later and no issues.

On the Tacoma, I disconnected the wiring harness under the seat and tested it with a multimeter; it showed a closed circuit whether the seatbelt was latched or not. I took the driver's side seat (60/40 split seat) out last night and had to separate the top and bottom cushions to get to the buckles, one for the driver and one for a middle passenger (must be really small, huh?). I discovered that the seat only has a seatbelt switch; no occupancy sensor. The Toyota buckles apparently cannot be disassembled without destroying the covers (which I did not do). However, the buckles separated from themselves before I got a good look at the mounting bolt, spring, and washers arrangement; does anyone have a photo or diagram to show re-assembly?

I soaked the driver's buckle in warm soapy water for over an hour and then dried it out with compressed air. I did remove a small piece of plastic film, like saran wrap, from inside the buckle. I sparingly sprayed some WD-40 inside to lube up the innards and displace any remaining water. The buckle release button spring is weak (button stays slightly depressed), but the buckle latches as it should. More importantly, now when tested with a multimeter, the microswitch inside closes the circuit when latched and opens the circuit when loose, as it should. Now maybe the seatbelt and airbag light will operate properly.

I will re-assemble and re-install the seat as soon as I can figure out how to get the afore-mentioned buckle mounting hardware in the right order.

When i was having my lil issue it would stay on with the key out. (Post #2). If you hadnt already check it out and unplug your cell phone and or charger from one of the outlets. Strange as it sounds that was my problem???

Well, I figured out how the buckles went back together. Got everything re-assembled and re-installed. Seat belt light and airbag light come on when ignition is on, then airbag light goes out (self-test). Seat belt light goes out when seat belt is buckled, and stays off even with pulling and tugging on seat belt, and then re-lights when seat belt is released. Cross my fingers as I watch over the next few days.

    - Since these lights are only supposed to light up with ignition in "on / run" positions, I think your problem is in the ignition switch if they stay lit with key off and removed.
