Airbag light on because of passenger seatbelt?

I have a 2013 reg cab bench seat tacoma. Currently the passenger seatbelt light next to the clock under the radio stays illuminated regardless of seat belt buckled or unbuckled with or without a passenger. Pretty sure that should not be on if no one is in the passenger seat if everything is working right. Can someone confirm? I think It has also tripped my Airbag light in the cluster (I believe) as thats now on.

Here is my problem, even with the airbag light when I scan the system (OBD II bluetooth dongle and an app that says it can scan airbags) it comes back 100% fine. But I got both lights.

What I have done? I tried reseating the connectors on the bottom of the seat. The 2 in the front.

Does anyone have diagrams of the pin outs for each connector and what values they should have with a multimeter reading resistance? Does that seatbelt light only indicate that the seatbelt receiver is not working right or could it be the occupancy detector? I would prefer to avoid the dealership as they just like taking money but obviously if I run out of ideas thats the next step. My genuine fear and what I have seen with them before (multiple toyota shops), is they say its xyz, take your money and when that does not solve it they just say now its this, take your money, etc... I find most of these places dont troubleshoot, just replace stuff until the light goes away.

Does anyone know if advance auto parts, napa, autozone, etc... scanners will pick it up? Again the airbag light is tripped so if its the seat I would imagine the OBDII port should give up some info with the right scanner.

Had a similar issue, turned out the passenger occupant seat sensor became uncalibated, completely turning off the passenger airbag system. I recalibrated it in 5 min with Techstream

In my experience, the auto parts store “free scan” tools don’t read SRS codes.
And neither do the cheaper scan tools.

If you’ve ever read codes by counting the “flashing light” then you can pull them yourself.
If you’ve never done this, then it can be a bit hard to explain.

With the uncalibrated passenger occupant sensor issue did you have the seatbelt light under the radio on? Or did you not notice that one way or the other?
Also it sounds like you are either a tech at a dealership or you bought techstream yourself? Any hints as to where one can obtain it? I have seen auctions on ebay but they sound sketchy (once you get the software you have the guy remote into your computer to fix it).

So I tried that, I guess on the 13's that does not work anymore. All the other lights (check engine, cruise control, etc...) were blinking but the airbag light stayed solid.

Yes seatbelt light under radio was constantly flashing and the light on the dash was on. I’m no dealer or tech and I did not buy it, allegedly lol lots of good threads about Techstream if you search, it can be had. The key is getting software that allows you to read AND write (aka: recalibrate your seat). Some of the versions you can only view and not change things. Good luck

Old thread I know, just experiencing some odd airbag stuff myself and it kind of seems like the passenger seat being occupied affects my situation. Could also be pure coincidence.

What code was your system throwing? Was it specifically complaining about the passenger seat, or another area?

I was getting B1771. I also tried to calibrate using techstream but that caused it to throw error B1797. Ended up being a disconnected harness under the passenger seat. Apparently I forgot to plug that back in. Might check the harnesses and reseat them. I should note I never got an OBDII error using any scanners other than techstream. Had to use TechStream to get any useful info.

I have a ODB scanner that also pulls ABS and SRS codes. I'm not getting either of those. But, your idea to just tear apart the console coverings and reseat... everything, that's a good idea. I had a mechanic check that the wiring from the control module to the seat belt tested out and was undisturbed but... not sure I trust that shop so much anymore. They've displayed incompetence on simple brake jobs with other people I know. Time to get the meter out! And I know not to send any voltage into the airbags themselves. Thanks for answering! I get a lot of solutions searching ancient threads so this helps a ton.

I should also note this was my post here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/techstream-tips-and-tricks.597998/page-25#post-25298222 that thread has incredibly helpful folks if you decide to try your hand at techstream. To me its a very valuable tool and that thread is extremely responsive. Definitely would have wasted lots of time and money at a dealership had it not been for them.

Should note I also had had 2 obdII scanners that claim to do ABS and SRS. They saw nothing. I think Toyota is screwing customers in that regard that they are making it somewhat proprietary. And for me the harness was not behind the console. Everything was under the seats. I realize there are things in the dash, but I would not start there. Wires should note be getting disturbed there, but every time you move the seat you move wires under the seats. I always start in areas like that. Good luck either way. It sucks chasing electrical gremlins.

Hey man thank you! Much appreciated. Once you get into the electronic side it's easy to get lost, car electronic engineering is so bizarre. Hey at least it's not a damn mercedes... my son inherited one for his first car, I helped him replace the stereo with and aftermarket and just what in the god damn @(*&#@(*&@# were they thinking in there. Overly complicated to the point of zero benefit and maximum cost/stupidity. But that's a different rant for another day...

So the codes suggest harness or wires for seat belt on passenger side. I would assume it would be the harness that gets the signal from the buckle as opposed to the one on the back pillar where the seat belt lives. So I would take the seat out (I had a bench, that sucks to remove), flip it over and just trace wires and look for scrapes where the it can short out. And I would reseat anything I saw.

Really, that's the passenger seat? I thought it was the drivers side. I'll pop the seat (buckets, 4 bolts to freedom) and reseat everything and test it out. About to go yank off my anti sway bar anyways!

https://www.autocodes.com/b1901_toyota.html Edited to add this - why I thought it was driver side. Still think it might be, thoughts?

Just went back and checked again. Its drivers side. I misspoke. Sorry about that.

No thank you for checking in! I'm double checking my internet sources. I haven't before seen that passenger side code before though. I did recently install a new stereo, I wonder if it noticed when I unplugged it. Should have unplugged the battery first, I bet I forgot and didn't think anything of it because "stereo" even though I was fiddling with that connector.

If you installed a stereo if you did any grounds near the drivers seat make sure those are still solid to the seat belt components. Otherwise yeah, just check the connectors. Its time consuming for sure. Good luck.
