So im probably missing this and its super simple is my guess, but I dont have an On/Off airbag switch and there is just a blank plastic cover in its place... do some tacomas not have them? If so do I even have an airbag on off switch anywhere? Its a 2002 PreRunner SR5.

Double cab Tacoma's don't require an Airbag on/off switch

I have an on/off switch for the passenger airbag in my 04 xtra cab

I thought all the later model 1st gens had them, but I guess not

edit - it might be for child safety seat purposes. Xtra cabs have to run most child safety seats in the front because there's so little room in the back. So the airbag must be able to be turned off.

Double cabs can just fit child seats in the back seat, so they didn't include an on/off switch for the front.

    That'd be my guess anyway

Like was said the double Cabs have no need to turn off the front right seat air bag when hauling kids around .

Yeah, as others said, the reason you would have an airbag switch is because you can't physically put a child car seat anywhere but the front seat. So when you have a car seat there for your child, turn the airbag off.

It ONLY turns off the passenger airbag.

You have a doublecab, so the child seat *always* goes in back.

I made a cell phone holder to go it place of the switch on my doublecab:

I can fit our infant car seat in the back of my xtra cab but the passenger seat has to be almost all the way forward. Luckily my wife is small but it's still not comfortable for anyone lol.

Our daughter is 8 months now and gonna be needing a bigger car seat soon though, which I highly doubt will fit back there

We rarely put her in my truck though, wife has a RAV4 we use as the family hauler

You can fit a square peg in a round hole (with enough force), lol

Yeah, that's tight. Not good for who ever is sitting in the passenger seat if the airbag goes off. Even if her knees don't touch the dash because she's short, her body/face is just as close as a person of average stature.

Have you thought about one of those crates for the bed like people have for their hunting dogs?

Weren't you talking about getting a doublecab a while back?

Yeah I'm still undecided long term if the truck stays as a toy and we get a better family camping one or just sell the truck and get something. Hard to imagine getting rid my truck after everything but a baby does force those decisions unfortunately lol.

And yeah we definitely turn the airbag off if my wife is up front with the baby in the back, that would hurt like hell having an airbag blow your knees straight up into your face lol

I pretty much just lucked out finding the doublecab. Got it before we had kids, and at the time I was pretty indifferent to the 2 or 4 door. Turns out it fit our 110 lb Golden pretty nicely, too. He would have been a tight squeeze in an xtracab, lol.

I have kinda' the same question about on/off ... Except mines a 2020 AC. (Brand new, and my 1st Taco)
Unless I just didn't notice it before, the light for the passenger side airbag says 'off' ...
Now, when i first got the rig a couple-three weeks ago, I was playing around with both screens getting a 'basic' understanding and kinda' setting stuff up the way I wanted it. Didn't really know what I was doing, but that's another story ..
Anyway, last night I was really going thru the ALL the options, so I really understood/learned what they all mean and do... (And being a guy, I'm 'Manual's? Phhhhbbbbtt! Only as a last resort.. I wanna play around with stuff .. Right guys?? LOL!)
So I'm figuring I played around with something I didn't know what I was doing. I looked through the 'Quick Reference' book .. Nothing.
Now I don't care if the passenger side air bag is off... 99% of the time, it's just me. I just want one *less* light lit.

That's on purpose. If you see that it's OFF and you have someone sitting next to you, that's a problem that needs to be addressed.

So, is there some sort of sensor in the passenger seat? (Like a lawn tractor, that kills the engine if there's not a 'Butt In The Seat' kinda' thing?) I'll have to have the wife come and sit in the seat and see what happens.
I'm kinda old ( 65, And 'old school' .. ) So when I see stuff light up on the dash, I'm kinda' 'Uh OH ... WHAT'S WRONG??'
So for me ... The less lights that light up, the better ... LOL!
I'll see what happens. Thank you for the tip

    4 run, 2 don't
Like mentioned, it's done that way on purpose.

Multiple newer cars I've had turn the passenger airbag off unless someone is sitting in it and the belt is buckled.

Yep, it's either a weight sensor or having the seatbelt plugged in. More likely a weight sensor since people sometimes forget to wear their seatbelts.

I get you, I think it's a little annoying too: my '16 4Runner does it as well. But it's just one of those many "safety features". The most annoying one for me is the fact that you can't mess around with the nav system while driving. I understand it's because I, as the driver shouldn't be getting distracted with all that stuff, but my wife should be able to do that as a passenger! My parents had a Tundra for a while, 2009ish iirc, and a warning came up and you could just tap a button saying "I'm not the driver". But Toyota soon realized the driver could just as easily tap that button, so they removed that go-around.

    I think I 'fixed' it ... LOL!
    Must be a 'computer thing' .. ???
Had the wife come out and sit and buckle-up. Started the truck. The light still came on. OK, so I thought 'Time for Plan B' whatever that was.. I left the seat belt plugged in though. Came out this morning, started the truck up .. No light.
Sooo ... It turned the light off, so I'm not gonna ask 'WHY' .. I'll just be happy ..
